Program offered on raising safe kids
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., will offer “ACT Raising Safe Kids Program” from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through March 21. It is a 10-session series. Special KCK school board meeting to be Feb. 1
A special meeting of the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Central Office and Training Center, superintendent’s conference room on the third floor, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The purpose of the meeting is to take action on a request for overnight student travel, and to recess into a closed session to discuss nonelected personnel matters, according to a meeting notice from the district.
NAACP to meet Feb. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Bethany Medical Building, 2nd floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. The agenda will include setting the agenda for 2016. The W.I.N. (Women in NAACP) committee will meet at 5 p.m. in the same place to complete arrangements for the Birthday-Black History celebration scheduled for Feb. 13. Pregnancy and infant loss support group to meet
A facilitated support group for family members who have recently, or some time ago, experienced the loss of miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss will meet on the first Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. BPU to meet Wednesday
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the board offices at 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. On the agenda for the work session at 5 p.m. are a board update and general manager update and a clean power plan update. The BPU’s regular meeting begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 3. On the agenda for the 6 p.m. meeting are a visitors’ time; communications update; pre-pay program update; board comments and general manager comments.
Learn ‘The Art of Bonsai’ at Feb. 4 program
“The Art of Bonsai,” a class, will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, Sunflower Room, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. Dexter White, Wyandotte County Extension master gardener, will present the program. Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees to grow in containers. Dexter White has cared for bonsai plants for 11 years and will share his knowledge. The fee for the class is $5. For information, call 913-299-9300.
Program offers advice on ‘What to Do When Your Child Is Sick’
A program, “What to Do When Your Child Is Sick,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. This program gives useful information for those wanting to care for themselves or another. Materials are easy to understand and help persons make good choices about how to care for everyday aches and pains and how to decide if an illness rises to the level of seeing a doctor or visiting an emergency room. UG Ethics Commission to meet Feb. 4
The Unified Government Ethics Commission will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, on the second floor, Wyandotte County Courthouse, 710 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. The meeting will be in Division 18 in the old county commissioners’ chambers.

Library plans Harry Potter book night
The West Wyandotte Branch Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., plans a Harry Potter book night at 6 p.m. Feb. 4. Themed snacks and activities are planned for those who are in third grade through 12th grade.
Black History and Scholarship Banquet to be Feb. 6
The 24th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The keynote speaker will be State Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, D-29th Dist. Sen. Faust-Goudeau was the first black woman to serve in the Kansas Senate. The event begins with a social hour at 5 p.m. Also, there will be an after-dinner dance at 8 p.m. The host of the event will be Cynthia Newsome, KSHB-TV news anchor. There will be live entertainment by KC Jazz and a poetry reading by Larry Guidry. Pre-registration is encouraged. Tickets are $45 per person. Police chief scheduled to speak Feb. 9 at LRA meeting
Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler is scheduled to speak at the Feb. 9 meeting of the Leavenworth Road Association. The meeting will start with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 followed by the program at 7 p.m. at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd. A chicken casserole will be provided, with those attending bringing side dishes.
KCK school board to meet Feb. 9
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Kansas City, Kan., Early Childhood Center, 1708 N. 55th St., Kansas City, Kan. An agenda may be posted at www.kckps.org.
Fairfax group to meet Feb. 11
The Fairfax Industrial Association will meet for a luncheon at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Board of Public Utilities offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Don Gray, BPU general manager, will speak, along with Bill Johnson, BPU manager of electric operations and technology. The cost of the luncheon is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Storm spotter training offered
A storm spotter training and severe weather seminar will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The seminar is offered by the Wyandotte County Emergency Management office and will feature a meteorologist from the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill, Mo. Poetry event planned Feb. 20
A poetry event is planned at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The event is in conjunction with Black History Month. The presenter and poetry reader will be Sheri “Purpose” Hall, an area poet.

Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., offers individual and couples counseling to women and men who might otherwise not be able to afford counseling. Holy Name Catholic Church cafeteria, 1007 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kan., will be the site of the Ragin’ Sweet and Spicy Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 6. The chili, soup and dessert cookoff is sponsored by the Holy Name Divas. Entries will be accepted in the school cafeteria from 4 to 5 p.m. “Stranded in the City” will provide music.
Judson Baptist Church, 8300 State Ave., will have an interim pastor preaching at Sunday services through March 13. Pastor Jim McCrossen will be preaching during January. The 8:30 a.m. service will be suspended during this time. Sunday School will be at 9:45 a.m. and the regular Sunday service will be 11 a.m.
A “Gospel Non-Violence” study group will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. “The Joy of the Gospel,” a two-part program, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 2 and 9 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Risen Lamb International Church of the Nazarene, located in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan., has announced the opening of the Risen Lamb Prayer Room and Retreat Center. On location at their church at 5301 Metropolitan Avenue, the prayer room and retreat center is open to the public for daytime retreats. All individuals or small groups seeking a quiet, sacred space to gather, pray, meditate, journal or read resources about prayer are welcome. The prayer room provides a peaceful space for solitude or can be scheduled in advance for groups of up to eight people. Guests seeking spiritual guidance may schedule a time of spiritual direction with one of the pastoral staff, and groups may inquire about scheduling a member of the pastoral team to lead or speak at a retreat. Herb White, a retired U.S. Postal Service worker and veteran community volunteer, is the new senior warden of the vestry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City Kan. White was chosen at St. Paul’s annual meeting Sunday, Jan. 31. Other new members chosen for the vestry, the official governing body of the parish, were Cathy Breidenthal and Tom Brown.
Stony Point Christian Church, 149 S. 78th St., will hold a preschool basket bonanza on Friday, Feb. 5. Items are being collected to help the preschool.
