by Kelly Rogge

Want to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely? You only have two more chances this year through Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Basic Rider Course.

There are two, three-day sessions to choose from for the Basic Rider Course – Oct. 16, 17 and 18 or Oct. 23, 24 and 25. Classes are from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for both sessions in Room 3622.

The course, which focuses on the special skills necessary to operate a motorcycle, is $200. Discounts are available for KCKCC employees. Students are required to come to the Continuing Education building on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave., to complete the paperwork required by the state. You can also pick up the workbook and class assignment at this time.

During the classroom portion of the course, students will learn about the different types of motorcycles as well as the vehicle’s controls, how they operate and how to be a responsible rider. Then the course will move outside where instructors will work with students on straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. As the class continues, students will progress to more difficult tasks such as cornering, swerving and emergency braking.

Motorcycles and helmets are provided for this course, and students are required to use the training motorcycles. In addition, students must wear eye protection, full finger gloves, long pants, a long sleeve shirt or jacket and sturdy shoes that cover the ankles. No baggy or flared pants are allowed. Students must have a valid driver’s license.

It is recommended that students practice riding a bicycle prior to the class in order to refresh their balance and coordination skills.

For more information visit the Basic Rider Course website or call 913-288-7660.

BPU employees compete for international recognition

Three linemen from the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities will compete against hundreds of other utility workers from around the country at the 32nd annual International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs, Kan., testing their professional and trade skills in a unique competition that is open to the public.

Thousands of utility professionals are in town for an annual trade show and expo in Overland Park, Kan., with the highlight being the “Lineman’s Rodeo,” a series of competitions testing various lineman skills and safety techniques.

The rodeo competition will occur on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, kicking off at 8 a.m. Team and apprentice events will include The Hurtman Rescue, the Pole Climb, and several mystery events. An Awards Banquet will be held at the Overland Park Convention Center at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

BPU will be represented by Mike Fergus, Jeremiah Waldeck, and Mike Caudle this year, competing against more than 200 teams from various private and municipal utilities.

In 2014, BPU’s team scored 398 out of 400 possible points, placing 6th out of 35 teams in the Municipality Group and placed 40th out of 204 total teams overall.

The International Lineman’s Rodeo was first held in 1984, and was created to maintain a focus on safety and safe work practices and to recognize the technical craft skills of utility lineman. One other purpose has always been for the participants to have fun while sharing work knowledge with others in their trade from different companies and different parts of the country.
