T-Bones offense shut out in loss

The Kansas City T-Bones shutout Gary yesterday, and Sunday afternoon the Railcats got revenge with a 3-0 victory at the U.S. Steelyard in Gary, Ind.

Kansas City starting pitcher Bobby Doran (8-6) allowed just three hits, but issued a season high seven walks. Doran was charged with all three runs, with two being earned.

The Railcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, after Doran walked Jose Sermo and Alex Hernandez to lead-off the inning. Two batters later, Spencer Mahoney grounded out to Vladimir Frias, but the turn on the double-play was wild past first, and Sermo scored the opening run.

The Railcats scored two additional runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The T-Bones pitching staff walked eight batters in total, and Gary allowed just two free passes.

Starlin Rodriguez was the only batter for Kansas City who reached base more than once. Rodriguez had two singles.

The T-Bones head into Monday’s final game of the season, needing a win to secure a winning season and a winning road trip.

The T-Bones (49-49) continue the final series in 2015, with a 1:10 p.m. start Monday afternoon against the Gary Southshore Railcats (44-55).

Police dog separates woman from gun

A police dog was used today to separate a woman from a handgun and take her into custody in the 3200 block of Everett Avenue.

Police said they went to the location at 1:40 p.m. Sept. 6 and found a woman in her 30s who was armed with a handgun in her backyard. She was threatening to harm herself, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and police negotiators arrived to speak with the woman. After a short standoff, the police tactical team deployed its K-9 to separate the woman from the weapon and take her into custody, the spokesman said.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical attention, police said.

The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

Ex-Piper standout’s two goals let KCKCC women win in overtime

by Alan Hoskins, KCKCC

Two goals by former Piper standout Katie Trzok, the second in overtime, has given the Kansas City Kansas Community College women’s soccer team its first two-game winning streak in the short history of the sport.

A 5-8 freshman defender, Trzok scored the game-winner five minutes into overtime in the 2-1 win over Maple Woods Thursday. The win boosted the Lady Blue Devils’ record to 2-1 heading into their Jayhawk Conference opener Thursday when they play host to Allen County at 4:30 p.m. The opener of a doubleheader, the KCKCC men will entertain Allen County at 7 p.m.

Trzok’s winning goal was set up by a free kick from freshman Loida Carranza from 25 yards out after Schlagle freshman Leticia Ramos had sprung Carranza and Tonganoxie sophomore Emily Soetart free with a big run along the left flank.

“It was no surprise to who was going to be charged with taking the shot,” said KCKCC head coach Jeremy Winzer. “A lot of credit goes to assistant coach Melanie Pickert who has been monitoring Trzok daily.”

The Blue Devils’ first goal in the opening period came on a solid cross by Bonner Springs’ freshman Allie Ledbetter, who got the ball to Trzok who found the bottom right corner of the net from 20 yards out.

“A great team goal,” Winzer said. “After the entire defensive unit touched the ball, midfielders Cristy Avelar and Madison Simmons set up Ledbetter for the assist.”

Winzer was particularly pleased with the Blue Devils’ fast start.

“Our sophomores, Emily Soetart, Madison Simmons and Chase Holle, really pushed the tempo and raised the standard. And the defensive unit of Allie Ledbetter, Veronica Samaniego, Katie Trzok and goalie Maria Hanson had a great day, allowing less than five shots on goal. They’ve been the heartbeat of the team and continue to improve which has given this team a lot of confidence because of their ability to move the ball around the back.

“This team continues to improve as a family and goes out and puts the grind in for 90 minutes. But it’s still a very young team with much more work to be done in order to be playing in the regional tournament at season’s end.”
