Sleepy driver hits trailer on I-70

A driver fell asleep and hit a semi trailer about 12:22 p.m. Aug. 18 on I-70 eastbound at the Turner Diagonal in Kansas City, Kan.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, the driver of a Dodge Journey, a 20-year-old man from Leavenworth, Kan., fell asleep while driving on eastbound I-70.

The Dodge struck the trailer of a semi driven by a 46-year-old Lees Summit, Mo., man, the report stated.

The driver of the Dodge had a possible injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the report. The driver of the semi was not injured, the report stated.

The rains that poured down on Wyandotte County Tuesday were the forerunner of Wednesday’s cooler temperatures.

Temperatures at 9 a.m. Wednesday were 59 degrees, and they are expected to reach a high in the low 70s today, with mostly cloudy skies, according to the National Weather Service. It is 12 to 18 degrees lower than the normal temperature for this time of year.

Today could be a little windy, with winds from the northwest at 5 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph. Tonight’s low may be near 56.

Dry weather will continue through Saturday. On Thursday, temperatures could rise to a high near 81, the weather service said, and Friday, the high could be 83.

Saturday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain and storms, with a high of 84, according to the weather service.

Unsettled weather will continue through Sunday before drier conditions return early next week.

Police question person in connection with double homicide

Kansas City, Kan., police took a person into custody for questioning about midnight on Aug. 18 in connection with the double homicide on Tuesday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

Police went to the 600 block of North 29th Street to locate a person of interest in the case, the spokesman said. They brought the person of interest to the detective bureau for more questioning, according to the spokesman.

Two men in their mid-20s died from apparent gunshot wound at 2:03 p.m. Aug. 18 in a shooting in the 1900 block of Quindaro Boulevard in Kansas City, Kan., police said.

This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
