NAACP to meet Sept. 1

The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Bethany Medical Center second floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan.

The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m.

Allen Elsey, youth pastor of the Rosedale Youth Group, will speak on “Reaching Out to Hurting Youth.” All members are encouraged to attend and the public is welcome.

The Women in NAACP (WIN) Committee is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. the same day at the same place.

Mayor’s Listening Tour planned today at Wyandotte High School

Mayor Mark Holland’s Listening Tour next will visit District 4 at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Wyandotte High School, 2501 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

Mayor Holland will make remarks, and then comments of residents will be heard in small discussion groups.

The purpose of the listening tour is to receive information from residents on how they would like to spend $12 million that is expected to become available in 2017 when STAR (sales tax revenue) bonds are paid in the Village West area.

The meeting is open to the public, and while it is for District 4, residents of other districts also may attend. The meeting is expected to end by 7:30 p.m.

CERT classes to begin Sept. 17

The Emergency Management department of the Unified Government is offering Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) classes starting on Sept. 17.

There is no cost for the class but seating is limited. Parking is free.

The classes will be held in the Emergency Operations Center in the basement of Kansas City, Kan., City Hall.

The classes will be on consecutive Thursdays from Sept. 17 through Nov. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m.
