Fire at 82nd and Ohio under investigation

A fire that caused $120,000 damage to a home at 8206 Ohio Ave. is under investigation, according to the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

A spokesman said the fire appeared to have started in the bedroom of the single-family home about 11:47 p.m. Jan. 25.

When fire crews arrived, within 2 minutes, they saw heavy black smoke coming from the single-story wood-framed structure, the spokesman said.

Residents had already left the building after being alerted by smoke alarms, the spokesman said.

The fire was extinguished within 40 minutes, according to the Fire Department.

The loss estimate is $100,000 to the property and $20,000 to the contents; the pre-fire value was $120,000, the Fire Department stated.

There were no injuries, the spokesman said.

Free basketball camp planned Feb. 7

A free basketball camp is planned from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Bethany Recreation Center, 1120 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

The free Jr. NBA camp is sponsored by Sumner Academy and the Kansas City, Kan., Parks and Recreation Department.

It is for boys and girls in second through seventh grades.

Lunch will be provided by the OK Program and Pride Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

Sumner Academy falls to Blue Valley Southwest; takes second in tournament

Although freshman Saadique Perkins recorded 15 points, Sumner Academy fell to Blue Valley Southwest 63-39 Friday in the championship game of the Spring Hill Invitational.

The Sabres got off to a very slow start only scoring 10 points in the 1st 16 minutes finding themselves down 10 – 30 at the halfway point.

Perkins was the front runner for the Sumner Academy offense with 15 points, including eight during the third period.

Fellow freshman De’Auan McClaine put up three three-pointers and scored nine points total.

Also contributing for the Sabres were Derek Sykes (7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block), Marvin Ellis (3 points) and Shaun Rainey (2 points, 4 rebounds).

Sumner Academy finished the game with 23 rebounds (11 offensive/12 defensive), one block and two steals.

Next, Sumner Academy (5-6) will play host to rival Piper on Tuesday.
