AARP to meet a week early, Nov. 20

Because of the holiday, the Center City Chapter AARP No. 1544 will meet one week earlier at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Pat Hanlon Center, 11th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan.

The chapter will continue an in-depth review of local family caregiving alternatives, experiences with aging health issues and services led by Alma Clark and Betty Reynolds.

Members will prepare a list of things they are grateful for in the annual Thankfulness tree ceremony and share holiday memories and preparations.

New and potential members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be potluck. Evelyn Welton is president of Center City AARP Chapter No. 1544.

Get ready for big plunge to arctic temperatures

Temperatures will plunge about 30 degrees – from today’s high near 66 to a high of 35 on Tuesday – as cold arctic air moves into the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Behind the cold front there could be some very minor freezing drizzle or perhaps a few snow flurries, the weather service said.

Little to no ice or snow accumulation is expected. Temperatures will remain rather chilly through the remainder of the week.

Today’s weather is mostly sunny with a high near 66. South winds will be 10 to 18 mph, becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph.

Tonight, there is a slight chance of showers at 9 p.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 29. A blustery north northwest wind of 9 to 14 mph will increase to 20 to 25 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. the chance of precipitation.

On Tuesday, Veterans Day, it will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a near 35. It will be breezy with a north northwest wind of 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

On Tuesday night, look for partly cloudy skies with a low of 20. The north northwest wind will be around 9 mph.

KCKCC women overcome early fouls for 86-62 road win

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s promising women’s basketball team passed its first road test Saturday, overcoming a rash of early fouls for an 86-62 win over North Central Missouri University in Trenton.

With four starters on the bench much of the first half with two fouls each, the Lady Blue Devils led just 32-26 before putting up 54 second half points.

“We had a big second half,” said KCKCC coach Valerie Stambersky. “Cierra Gaines took control with13 of her 16 points in the second half; Rashaun Casey and Ky’Ana French hit back-to-back three-pointers; and Julia Garrard did a very good job on the boards. It wasn’t all pretty but it was a good road win.”

Casey led the Blue Devils with 17 points while Gaines added 16, Erin Anderson 13, Cassidy Harbert 11 and French 9. Harbert also had seven assists and six steals and Janai Mitchell four steals as the Blue Devils had 24 steals while forcing 33 turnovers. Garrard led the rebounding with seven.

Now 2-0, the Blue Devils are back home this week for their biggest early season tests when they play host to the annual Keith Lindsey Classic.

KCKCC will play Ellsworth Friday at 6 p.m. and Penn Valley Saturday at 4 p.m. In the other half of women’s play, Fort Scott will play Penn Valley Friday at 2 p.m. and Ellsworth Saturday at noon. In men’s play, KCKCC will play On Point Academy Friday at 8 p.m. and the St. Louis Archers Saturday at 6 p.m. while Highland will play St. Louis Friday at 4 p.m. and On Point Saturday at 2 p.m.
