Record cold temperatures are expected across the region today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Conditions also will be windy during the day today, resulting in single-digit wind chill values.

Temperatures will fall into the single digits tonight, and wind chills will fall below zero for much of the overnight period, the weather service said.

At 9 a.m., the temperature was 21 degrees in Kansas City, Kan., with a wind chill of 8 degrees. That 21 degrees is the same as today’s predicted high.

The wind was 14 mph from the northwest, gusting to 29 mph.

The weather service said there was a chance of scattered flurries today.

Tonight, the low will be around 9, with the wind child between zero and 5. A west wind will be between 5 and 10 mph.

Tuesday’s forecast is sunny, with a high of 30. Tuesday night, look for a low around 26.

Wednesday, the temperature will climb to near 34, and Thursday, near 41.

There is a chance of rain in Saturday and Sunday’s forecast, according to the weather service.

Three highway crashes reported in Wyandotte County

Three crashes were reported on highways in Wyandotte County, all on I-35, around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

At 5:48 a.m. Sunday, on I-35 northbound just south of 7th Street in Kansas City, Kan., an accident occurred, according to the highway patrol.

A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was northbound on I-35 when the driver lost control of the truck and collided with the barrier wall, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver, a 42-year-old man from Shawnee, Kan., was injured and taken to a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.

Another accident was reported at 6:01 a.m. Sunday on I-35 between 19th Street and Southwest Boulevard.

A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was on I-35 when the driver lost control and struck the barrier wall, according to the trooper’s report.

A 50-year-old woman from Shawnee, Kan., was injured and taken to a Kansas City, Kan., hospital, according to the report.

At 6:06 a.m. Sunday, a 2009 Buick car was northbound on I-35 near Roe lane when the driver lost control on the icy road and struck a parked 2004 Chevy pickup truck, according to the trooper’s report. The pickup truck was parked on the shoulder and had no driver.

The driver, a 66-year-old man from Overland Park, Kan., had a possible injury and was taken to a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
