Strawberry Hill Museum open for holidays
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., has opened for the holidays and will remain open on weekends through Sunday, Jan. 26. The museum, decorated in Victorian style, is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with special tours available by appointment. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. St. Nicholas will visit the museum from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Nighttime tours will be available at 6 p.m. Fridays, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for the nighttime tours, which includes refreshments and dessert. NAACP to meet Dec. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the KCKPS Training Center, first floor, 2010 N. 59th St. (59th and Parallel Parkway), Kansas City, Kan. KCKCC candlelighting ceremony to be Dec. 3
Kansas City Kansas Community College’s oldest tradition is returning Dec. 3, honoring the holiday season while raising funds for scholarships at the same time. The 92nd annual Candlelighting Ceremony is at 9 and 11 a.m. Dec. 3 in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center on the main campus, 7250 State Ave. Classes will not be held during the 11 a.m. lighting, so that all personnel and students, who wish to, can participate in the program. However, the Jewell Center, KCKCC Library and all offices will be open during those hours to serve individuals who choose not to participate in the ceremony.
BPU to meet Dec. 3
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities will meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at the board offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. There will be only one BPU meeting on Dec. 3. On the agenda are a visitors’ time, “Everyday Hero” announcement, resolution to waive builder fees, October financial report, board comments and general manager comments.

Downtown KCK holiday lighting ceremony to be Dec. 5
Mayor Mark Holland’s Downtown Kansas City, Kan., Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. just outside City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., KCK. The lighting will be at 7:15 p.m. Events include the tree lighting, holiday movies, crafts for children, and performances by choirs, bands and dance groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with children. Food vendors will be selling food and refreshments. Admission is free; concessions are available for purchase.
Alternate Chili Run planned Dec. 6

Grinter Place plans holiday with the arts Dec. 6
An evening of visiting with local artists, viewing their works, visiting with and listening to local authors, plus live music played by local musicians, is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Grinter Place, 1420 S. 78th. Historic Westheight Holiday Homes Tour to be Dec. 7
The Historic Westheight Manor Holiday Homes Tour will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Westheight neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan. Six historic homes will be on the one-day tour in the area located from North 18th Street to North 25th Street, State Avenue to Wood Avenue. Historic Westheight Manor has one of the richest architectural histories in all of Kansas City, according to one of the organizers of the event. Notable architects such as Louis S. Curtiss, Victor J.Defoe (who began his career with J.C. Nichols), Edward Buehler Delk (who also helped build the County Club Plaza), J.G. Braecklein and W.W. Burnout workshop planned Dec. 9
A free workshop on “Burnout, Adrenal Fatigue and Stress Syndrome” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The workshop is sponsored by Mental Health America of the Heartland. Heather Clark, who holds a doctorate in pharmacy, will speak. She will talk about her “Burnout Cure” program. ‘Business Basics 4 Boomers’ program offered Dec. 12 on starting a business
The Workforce Development Department at Kansas City Kansas Community College, AARP in Kansas City, and Next Chapter Kansas City, a program of Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., have joined together to offer “Business Basics 4 Boomers” from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at the Dr. Thomas R. Burke KCKCC Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave, Kansas City, Kan. People at all stages of starting a business and those who are just considering the idea can attend. Also, while the event targets the Baby Boomer generation, younger people also can participate. The half-day conference will consist of a panel of successful business owners and a panel of representatives of business resource organizations, who will share experience, information, and advice for the “encore entrepreneur.” Encore entrepreneurs are the growing number of persons who are seeking to launch income-generating ventures that make a positive difference in their communities after leaving their primary career or in anticipation of doing so. The business owners’ panel will be moderated by Charley Vogt, senior vice president of business-economic development with Country Club Bank. Panel members will include Joyce Moore, owner of Goin Postal, Tim Ney, owner-operator of drivekansas, and Doug Danforth, founder and CEO of Links-It. The panel of business resource organizations will be moderated by Patricia Brown-Dixson, Region 7 Administrator for the US Small Business Administration. Panelists will include Elisa Waldman with the JCCC Small Business Development Center, Kate Hodel with KC Source Link, and a representative from the SCORE Association. Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to visit booths of business resource organizations.
