Vacant UG Commission seat on Thursday’s UG agenda

by Mary Rupert

The Unified Government on Thursday is scheduled to consider a method of filling the vacant UG Commission 1st District at-large seat.

After the commission selection process ended in a tie vote a little over a year ago, the seat has remained vacant. Several votes were taken that ended in a tie.

Commissioners on Thursday may consider a process that would select a commissioner from a list of applicants. However, the proposal as listed on the agenda would not allow Nathan Barnes and Don Budd Jr., the top two vote-getters at the last vote, to be selected. Fifteen other applicants who had submitted their names previously would be considered if they are still interested in the position, according to the proposed method outlined in the agenda.

If approved, the commission may vote on the vacant seat at a meeting at the end of August, according to the agenda.

Alvin Sykes, a human rights activist, said that if there is a plan to exclude any of the candidates, he is not in favor of it. If Barnes and Budd are excluded from the candidates, he would be in favor of continuing a lawsuit on the issue, he added.

He said he would not be against starting the entire process over, with the public allowed to apply for the position.

Commissioner Tarence Maddox sent his constituents a message earlier today about the possibility of the selection process opening again.

Bill Hurrelbrink, a spokesman for Mayor Mark Holland, said today that the mayor made the same motion last July (about a year ago) and there was no action by the commission then. Now that 13 months have passed and the commission has worked together well on two budgets, the mayor feels that they might be ready to try to vote again on the commission seat, Hurrelbrink said.

The vacant seat was the subject of a lawsuit filed by Carolyn Wyatt to try to get the seat filled. The lawsuit stated that Wyatt suffered a lack of representation because of the vacancy on the commission.

The lawsuit quotes the UG charter, which says the commission “shall” fill the seat, meaning it must fill the seat.

However, the UG charter did not say when the seat must be filled; neither did it describe a method of breaking a tie.

State Sen. David Haley last week said he wanted to call a meeting of Wyandotte County legislators, UG commissioners and the mayor in order to discuss filling the vacant position. If it is not filled, legislators may discuss a bill that might resolve it, such as a provision for breaking a tie vote.

Hurrelbrink said the lawsuit is scheduled to come before a judge in September.

“This is a good-faith effort to get it settled before then,” he said.

There has been some sentiment on the commission in the past to let the position wait until next spring to be filled in the election, Hurrelbrink added.

Today, the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department held a meeting with the local media. The meeting was very casual. It gave the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department and the media a chance to get to know each other.

“The reason why we decided to hold this meeting is for us to know you and you to know us,” said Police Chief Ellen Hanson. “After all we both have a job to do. It works in both of our favors that we were together.”

One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the concealed carry law. Members of the media asked the Police Department if there was a faster way to contact them regarding a recent crime that was committed.

At the end the meeting Chief of Police Hanson said, “I want to hold other meetings like this. These meetings like this are beneficial to both of us.”

The meeting ended on a positive note.

Sporting KC midfielder Benny Feilhaber voted MLS Player of the Month for July

Benny Feilhaber

Feilhaber is third Sporting KC player to win award in past three months

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month for July, MLSsoccer.com announced on Tuesday.

“It feels great but it’s a team award in many ways. I’m excited that we’re back in the Supporters’ Shield race and thanks to all the fans for voting,” Feilhaber said.

Feilhaber becomes the third Sporting KC player to win the award in the past three months, following Dom Dwyer in May and Eric Kronberg in June. Sporting Kansas City is now the first team to claim Player of the Month honors in three consecutive months in the league’s 19-year history.

The 29-year-old midfielder led Sporting KC to the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings with a a 4-0-1 record in July. The 13 points gained in the month were more than any other MLS team.

After recovering from a sprained left shoulder suffered on June 6 — and becoming a father on June 26 — Feilhaber played every minute for Sporting Kansas City in the month of July. He earned MLS Player of the Week recognition in Week 19 and earned MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week honors for a second straight time in Week 20.

Feilhaber contributed to both goals in a 2-1 win at the Columbus Crew mid-month, setting up C.J. Sapong for the opening goal in the 42nd minute before scoring the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute. He followed that performance with a superbly taken free kick goal against the LA Galaxy three days later to hand the four-time MLS champions their only loss in the past 11 games.

While outside of MLS play, Feilhaber’s name was again on the scoresheet with an assist against reigning English Premier League Champions Manchester City in an international friendly at Sporting Park on July 23. Feilhaber flighted a perfectly placed pass for Sapong to level the score at 1-1 in the Champions Shield match-up.

Feilhaber currently leads the team with five assists and ranks second among Sporting KC players with four goals in all competition this season. In addition, he has suffered the second most fouls among all MLS players this season (55).

A member of the United States Men’s National Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Feilhaber is in his fourth MLS season and second with Sporting KC after being acquired in a trade from the New England Revolution in December 2012. The Brazilian-born playmaker contributed the game-winning assists in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and Eastern Conference Championship en route to the 2013 MLS Cup championship.

Today’s honor is Feilhaber’s first career MLS Player of the Month recognition, finishing ahead of Erick Torres (CHV), Bill Hamid (DC), Bradley Wright-Phillips (NY) and Gyasi Zardes (LA). Under a new format in 2014, Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month is determined by the fans via online voting. Five nominees are selected each month by the editorial staff of MLSsoccer.com.
