Big inning saves T-Bones

The Kansas City T-Bones scored eight unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings Thursday night in an 8-3 win over Gary SouthShore at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

After putting up two in the seventh and trailing 3-2, Kansas City blew the game open with a six-run eighth.

After a lead-off walk to T.J. Mittelstaedt Kevin Brahney (5-2), Danny Richar singled, moving Mittelstaedt to third. Matt Padgett then walked before Nick Schwaner added his second and third RBIs of the game with a two-run single that scored Richar and Padgett.

Bryan Sabatella then singled to right, which plated Ray Sadler, who reached on a fielder’s choice. Two batters later, Brian Erie doubled in Schwaner and moved Sabatella to third.

The decisive blow was a two-out, two-run single from Robby Kuzdale that capped the scoring for Kansas City.

For the second straight game, the T-Bones fell behind 2-0 after the first inning. Kansas City starting pitcher Kyle DeVore gave up those runs along with one more in 5 2/3 innings.

The T-Bones finally were able to get to Gary starting pitcher Stephen Hiscock with two runs in the seventh inning.

Schwaner got Kansas City on the board with a solo home run to right, his third of the season. Kansas City would add their second run of the inning with another two-out RBI single from Erie that scored Sabatella and pulled Kansas City to within 3-2.

Kansas City reliever Pat Doyle (4-4) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Kris Regas pitched 2 scoreless innings, preserving the win for Kansas City.

The T-Bones (34-36) and RailCats (40-30) will continue the four-game series with game three Friday night at 7:10.
