Two cases of measles reported in Johnson County

Johnson County and state health authorities confirmed Friday that there were two cases of measles in Johnson County, Kan.

Measles, a respiratory disease, is highly contagious and is spread through the air by breathing, coughing, or sneezing. The signs and symptoms of measles typically begin one to two weeks after someone is exposed to an infected person.

“The best way to keep from getting the disease is by being vaccinated. Protect children by making sure they have the MMR vaccine when they are 12 to 15 months old, and again before they enter kindergarten,” said Dr. Robert Moser, KDHE secretary and state health officer.

With the creation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine, measles cases are rare in the United States; however, it still sickens approximately 20 million and kills 164,000 people worldwide each year.

Symptoms of measles include:
• Fever
• Blotchy rash on the skin, which spreads from the head to the trunk then to the lower extremities (Measles can be spread to others from four days before to four days after the rash appears.)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
• Feeling run down, achy
• Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers found inside
the mouth (Koplik’s spots)

Those who have a fever should stay home, except to see a health care provider. Call ahead to the health care provider so appropriate measures can be made to protect others, health officials said.

Those at high risk for severe illness and complications from measles include infants, children under 5, adults over 20 years old, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Supreme Court upholds Wyandotte County murder conviction

The Kansas Supreme Court today upheld the conviction of Dominic Verser on first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm charges in a March 2009 shooting death.

The case involved the death of Olivia Anaekwe, the mother of Verser’s child.

The court unanimously affirmed Verser’s convictions, originally in Wyandotte County District Court.

Among other rulings, the court held that the district court committed both statutory and constitutional error when it failed to read an answer to a jury question in open court and in the presence of Verser. However, the error was harmless in light of substantial evidence against Verser.

The court also held that when the testimony of a state’s witness has been so successfully impeached that it is shown to be a fabrication, and the defense chooses to continue the trial in order to use the testimony to its advantage rather than argue for mistrial, any error in failing to grant the state’s motion for mistrial is, at most, invited error that cannot provide relief on appeal.

Storms possible Saturday

While there is a 30 percent of showers and storms this afternoon, storms are more likely tonight and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The chance of storms increases to 70 percent tonight, mainly after 1 a.m., and then to 90 percent on Saturday. However, the worst of the storms may be south of the Kansas City area.

Friday’s high is expected to be 83 degrees, with winds of around 7 mph.

The National Weather Service stated that the threat of severe thunderstorms looks to be very low at this time for far eastern Kansas and northern Missouri on Saturday, and is focused in areas to the west and south, particularly central Kansas into southern Missouri.

Storms are possible tonight through Tuesday, the weather service said. Some of this activity could produce torrential rain, which would lead to additional flooding across the area.

Rainfall could top 2 to 4 inches through the weekend in the region and could lead to flooding, the weather service said.
