Piper bridge project rescheduled for Monday

The Piper bridge repair project on U.S. 73 – K-7 over Piper Creek has been rescheduled for Monday, June 9.

The project was supposed to start June 5, but was delayed because of rain.

A Kansas Department of Transportation spokesman said that on Monday, northbound and southbound U.S. 73 – K-7 traffic will be shifted and placed side by side, one lane each direction, in the existing northbound U.S. 73 – K-7 lanes from Parallel Parkway to Donahoo Road.

The lane closures will start around 10 a.m. Monday, and continue through late September 2014.

Traffic will be directed via signs, cones and arrow boards through the project work zone. There will be a 55 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration. Drivers should expect major delays during the daily peak time commutes and adjust their travel times accordingly, according to KDOT.

Operation Facelift


Douglass-Sumner Neighborhood Association held its annual Operation Facelift neighborhood clean-up day on April 27. About 40 student volunteers from Sumner Academy helped pick up trash in alleyways, streets and residential yards. Douglass-Sumner Neighborhood received funding from Livable Neighborhoods and Greater Kansas City LISC for the event. The residents helped by preparing the food for the event to feed the volunteers. Attending the event were a Kansas City, Kan., police officer; Beatrice Lee, a neighborhood leader; and Angela Eley, a former LISC staff member.

Grandview Christian Church, 8550 Parallel Parkway, is collecting canned goods for Help 3:17, a local food pantry.

“Scripture Study, Bible Sharing and Reflection, Lectio and Journaling,” a regular weekly series facilitated by pastoral minister, Heather Neds, is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Living Water United Methodist Church, 3001 N. 115th St., plans a Band and Barbecue event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8. There will be a free concert and barbecue at the family event. Disc golf, games and music are planned. All are welcome. Living Water plans a Worship-Arts-Music Camp from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 16-19 for children in preschool through eighth grade. Activities include drumming, singing, playing instruments, movement and visual arts. Students will explore worship through the arts. St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th, will be the host for the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Mass will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 21, at St. Patrick. A presentation on the Fatima message will be given by Deacon Bob Ellis after the Mass.

Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., will travel to Topeka Saturday, June 7, to witness the ordination as a deacon of Don Compier at Grace Cathedral. Compier will be the guest preacher at the 11 a.m. Sunday service June 8 at St. Paul’s which will be in English and Spanish. Members will observe Pentecost; a baptism of two infants is planned. A potluck dinner will follow in the parish hall.
