Wyandotte County wrestlers qualify for state tourney

Wrestlers from Schlagle, Turner, Washington, and Wyandotte high schools competed along with several other eastern Kansas schools in the 5A regional wrestling tournament held at Turner on Friday and Saturday.

Schlagle senior Tylen Wallace won the 285-pound weight class with pins in all four of his matches, each within less than two minutes.

Turner senior Matt Hook won the 170-pound weight class with three pins and one decision in his four victories.

Schlagle senior Mason Turner won the 126-pound weight class with three pins and one technical fall, that is, a match stopped early because of a 15-point differential.

Mill Valley High School won the team championship, with Blue Valley Southwest in second, and Topeka’s Shawnee Heights in third.

Local athletes who placed in the top eight in their weight classes, making them eligible for the state tournament next weekend in Park City, Kan., near Wichita, included:

106 pounds: Nicky Gutierrez, Turner, 5th; Daylen Borisouth, Schlagle, 6th
113 pounds: Jonah Andrews, Schlagle, 3rd
120 pounds: Bobby Primers, Schlagle, 4th; Byron Kirkwood, Turner, 6th
126 pounds: Mason Turner, Schlagle, 1st
138 pounds: Jaylaan Castro, Wyandotte, 8th
160 pounds: Phoenix Downs, Schlagle, 3rd
170 pounds: Matthew Hook, Turner, 1st
182 pounds: Ricardo Yanez, Turner, 2nd
195 pounds: Cameron Bates, Turner, 2nd; Yaseen Chapell, Wyandotte, 8th
220 pounds: Jordan Goff, Turner, 3rd; Paul Beasley, Schlagle, 4th; Roberto Nieves, Wyandotte, 8th
285 pounds: Tylen Wallace, Schlagle, 1st; Joseph Castle, Turner, 4th
