Snow began falling in Wyandotte County Sunday morning, as the area is under a winter weather storm warning until 6 p.m. Monday night.
The National Weather Service is calling for snow throughout the day Sunday, tonight and Monday, the weather service said. The snowfall will be heavy at times Sunday. From 3 to 5 inches of snow may fall during the two days.
Freezing rain also will be possible later this evening, and between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., and after 4 a.m. Monday, according to the weather service.
Snow will intensify into and through the afternoon today, especially across areas south of the Missouri River, the weather service said. Snow will gradually taper off through Sunday evening.
Areas south of the Missouri River will see steady snow, with occasional periods of heavy snow exceeding one to two inches per hour, according to the weather service.
While most of the precipitation will be snow through the day on Sunday, the afternoon and evening will bring the most likely window for light freezing rain, the weather service said.
Freezing drizzle and freezing rain should remain light, with a tenth, up to a quarter-inch of accumulation taking place through Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service.
After a brief lull on Sunday night, light snow is expected to move in for Monday morning, and may last through the day, the weather service said. At this time the amount of snow on Monday will not be expected to be as great as that on Sunday.
On Monday, light snow through the day is expected, with higher amounts along and south of the Missouri River.
KC Scout was reporting an accident at 9:50 a.m. Sunday on I-35 southbound on the ramp from 7th Street Trafficway.
KC Scout also reported several crashes on I-435 in Johnson County on Sunday morning.
Visibility is reduced currently, plan on slippery road conditions, the weather service said. Hazardous road conditions are likely on Sunday and Monday.
Those who are traveling should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency, according to the weather service.
