Wyandotte County is under a severe thunderstorm watch from 8:05 a.m. today until 2 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon and evening across the region, the weather service said.
Large hail and damaging winds will be possible in the region. A weather service radar map showed a large storm system this morning west of Manhattan, Kan., moving eastward.
In addition to the severe weather threat, periods of heavy rainfall will be possible during the overnight hours, which may lead to developing flash flooding and river flooding, according to the weather service.
Thunderstorm chances will then continue through the upcoming weekend. Widespread severe weather is not expected at this time, according to the weather service.
There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m. today, the weather service said. The high will be near 92 with a heat index as high as 102 today, and a south southwest wind of 7 to 13 mph.
Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of storms and showers, according to the weather service. Some could produce heavy rain, with between a quarter inch and half-inch of rain in the forecast. The low will be around 70, with a calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph after midnight.
On Thursday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 89, the weather service said. A light and variable wind will become north northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Thursday night, expect a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. It will be mostly cloudy with a low of 68.
On Friday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service. It will be mostly sunny with a high of 85. A calm wind will become south southwest around 5 mph in the morning. Friday night, the low will be around 68.
More rain is in the forecast for Saturday and Saturday night, when there is a 40 percent chance during the day and a 30 percent chance at night, the weather service said.
Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high of 91, according to the weather service.
