Wyandotte County is under a severe thunderstorm watch from 8:30 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
The watch also is in effect for Leavenworth, Johnson, Miami, Atchison, Doniphan and Linn counties, according to the weather service.
Some tornado warnings are in effect for communities to the west of the Greater Kansas City area, including southern Wabaunsee County, which is near Topeka; another tornado warning is in Eureka, in Greenwood County, in the general Wichita area, to the southwest of Kansas City; and a tornado watch is in effect for 20 Kansas counties near the Topeka area.
A new tornado warning has been issued from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday for Atchison County and the city of Atchison. This storm has a possible tornado, half-dollar-size hail and flying debris. Residents there are advised to take cover in an interior room in the lowest floor of their building.
