Today, there is an air quality alert in effect for Wyandotte County, according to the Mid-America Regional Council.
It will be a hot and sunny day, with temperatures near 92 and a heat index as high as 95, the National Weather Service said. There will be a south wind of 5 to 8 mph.
Air quality index values in excess of 100 are expected today, with ozone being the primary pollutant, according to MARC.
Residents and businesses are asked to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, including refueling vehicles and topping off, idling vehicles unnecessarily and using gasoline-powered lawn equipment. Positive activities that may help the environment include car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands, and using water-based paints and cleaners.
Hot and humid conditions will bring heat indices into the mid to upper 90s each afternoon, the weather service said.
According to the weather service, the hot weather today may be followed by three days of possible storms and rain.
A few storms could become strong to severe early Thursday morning in the region, according to the weather service. Additional strong to severe storms are possible Thursday afternoon and evening, and again on Friday.
