‘World’s largest swimming lesson’ taking place at Schlitterbahn today

Schlitterbahn Waterparks and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City are participating in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Thursday, June 18, to promote the importance of water safety.

The swim lessons take place at hundreds of locations around the world, including at all four Schlitterbahn Waterparks simultaneously on the 18th at 10 a.m. Central Time in a coordinated attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

Schlitterbahn and the Y hope to promote the importance of teaching children to swim at a young age to prevent drowning. Fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

Team WLSL holds the current Guinness World Record™ for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, which stands at 36,564 participants representing 22 different countries! Since the event’s inception more than 120,000 people have participated in the WLSL lessons generating more than 150 million media impressions.

The swim lesson for the world record attempt is free. The registration deadline was 9 p.m. Tuesday to participate.
