It is snowing Saturday morning in Wyandotte County, where there was a light dusting of snow on lawns and sidewalks at 9 a.m. The temperature was 29 degrees and was expected to reach a high of 34 today. A freeze warning is in effect starting at 6 p.m. today through 1 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service said light accumulating snow will spread into the area this morning and last off-and-on into the afternoon hours. Around one inch of snow is predicted for Wyandotte County.
A thin band of heavier accumulation up to an inch and a half or even 2 inches also is possible, the weather service said. The most likely area for this to occur is near and just north of I-70, but it could shift slightly north or south.
Warm ground temperatures will keep most snow accumulation confined to elevated and grassy surfaces, but lingering moisture on roadways could freeze after dark as temperatures quickly drop into the 20s, according to the weather service.
A hard freeze is expected tonight with temperatures in the teens and 20s for several hours, the weather service said. This could result in damage to vegetation that has already begun to bloom, and a freeze warning has been issued for areas that have seen this very early start to the growing season.
Today’s forecast says snow is likely before 4 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., then a slight chance of rain after 5 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 34, with an east northeast wind of 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight, it will be cloudy, then gradually clearing, with a low of 22, according to the weather service.
Sunday’s forecast is a high near 47, with increasing clouds, the weather service said. A light east southeast wind will become south 8 to 13 mph in the morning, gusting as high as 22 mph.
