Storms are in today’s forecast from the National Weather Service.
A storm was moving through parts of Wyandotte County, including the western part, around 8:30 a.m., moving in an eastward direction. The storm included lightning and wind.
Morning storms are not expected to be severe, but will set the stage for redevelopment of widespread severe storms later today, as early as noon, according to the weather service. A very unstable air mass is developing over the region.
The afternoon storms coming later today will likely be severe, the weather service said. Widespread damaging winds of 60 to 80 mph are possible, as well as a few storms with very large hail and one or two tornadoes in the region, the weather service said. Heavy rain may fall here.
The focus for the highest chance of severe weather will be along and south of I-70, with the highest risk for tornadoes across portions of southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri early this afternoon as the storms develop and move east.
Residents are advised to listen for watches and warnings today on a weather radio or be connected to updated weather reports on television, radio or www.weather.gov.
The forecast for Wyandotte County calls for a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, mainly after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 81 with an east southeast wind of 6 to 9 mph. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.
Tonight, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and storms before 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 58. A north northwest wind of 7 to 9 mph is in the forecast. Between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain is possible.
Sunday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 77, the weather service said. A northwest wind of 9 to 13 mph will gust as high as 22 mph.
Sunday night, the forecast is clear weather with a low of 57, and a west southwest wind of 5 to 10 mph, according to the weather service.
Monday, Memorial Day, it will be sunny with a high near 80, the weather service said, and a west northwest wind of 6 to 13 mph.
