Weather: Chances good for wind, storms and fire today

Today is a triple hazard thread, with a high fire danger, a wind advisory and a severe weather threat, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong southerly winds this morning are expected to become even stronger by late morning increasing to 30 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to 50 mph, prompting a wind advisory in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, according to the weather service.

Winds will diminish below advisory criteria around sunset but will remain strong, the weather service said.

Also, fire danger is high in the region, and burning should be avoided, according to the weather service. Any fuels that ignite could quickly burn out of control. The weather service has issued a fire weather watch for Tuesday in Wyandotte County.

Severe weather is possible this evening, also, the weather service said. The main threats will be large hail, damaging winds, an even an isolated tornado or two, according to the weather service.

Today, there will be a 60 percent chance of rain, showers and thunderstorms after noon in Wyandotte County, the weather service said. The high will be near 72, with a south southwest wind of 16 to 26 mph, gusting as high as 44 mph. If you want to measure these for yourself then head down to your local department store and pick up some trusty wind meters!

Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 38, with a south southwest wind of 16 to 21 mph becoming 8 to 13 mph in the evening. Winds may gust as high as 29 mph.

Tuesday, it will be sunny with a high near 60, the weather service said. A west wind of 9 to 14 mph will increase to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, gusting as high as 36 mph.

Tuesday night, it will be clear with a low of 34, the weather service said, and a west wind of 6 to 13 mph, gusting as high as 22 mph.

Wednesday, it will be sunny with a high near 67, according to the weather service. A southwest wind of 6 to 14 mph will gust to as high as 23 mph.

Wednesday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 46, the weather service said.

Thursday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 71, according to the weather service.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 41, the weather service said.

Friday, expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 60, according to the weather service.

Friday night, there is a 60 percent chance of rain, mainly after midnight, the weather service said. The low will be around 41.

Saturday, the chance of rain is 70 percent, with a high near 54, according to the weather service.

Saturday night, expect partly cloudy skies and a low of 32, the weather service said.

Sunday, the forecast is partly sunny with a high near 57, according to the weather service.
