The victim of a fatal accident at 2:05 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, on westbound I-70, west of Bonner Springs in Leavenworth County, has been identified, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The victim was Nathan Pena, 19, of Brookfield, Illinois, according to the trooper’s report. He was driving a Subaru.
The accident occurred when another vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, was traveling westbound on I-70, fleeing from law enforcement, according to the trooper’s report.
The driver of the Tahoe made a U-turn before reaching the toll plaza and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, the trooper’s report stated.
Pena saw the Tahoe going the wrong way and made an evasive maneuver to the north ditch, the trooper’s report stated.
The driver of the Tahoe then struck the Subaru in the north ditch, according to the trooper’s report.
The driver of the Tahoe was a 29-year-old man from Kansas City, Kansas, who had no apparent injury, the trooper’s report stated.
