UG steps down snow emergency phase to advisory

The Unified Government reduced the snow emergency declared during the winter storm Sunday to an advisory on Monday morning.

Drivers have completed plowing and treating primary and secondary roads, according to a UG spokesman. The focus now will be on treating neighborhood streets for the remainder of the day.

Until the advisory is terminated, the UG is encouraging drivers to not allow their vehicles to stall, block roadways, or create traffic congestion due to ineffective driving wheels and tires.

Also, the UG is requesting residents to park in areas that will not obstruct drivers’ access to designated snow routes.

Because of the inclement weather:
• Residential trash pick-up and recycling services have been delayed until Tuesday
• Transit will continue to operate normal fixed route and para-transit services. However, expect delays of up to 30-minutes on fixed routes and one hour on para-transit service
• Wyandotte-Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging has canceled the home delivered meals and nutrition sites for today. The enhanced fitness class is canceled as well.

The UG offered these street and safety tips:
• Trucks are plowing snow and spreading salt and sand. Stay back from the plows at least six (6) car lengths to avoid problems.
• Please do not pull directly behind slow plows. If you cannot see the driver, the driver cannot see you.
• Plow trucks generally push snow to the passenger side of the truck (right side when looking from the rear). Never attempt to pass a truck on the right side since there can be much more snow on that side of the vehicle.
• When cleaning driveways or parking lots, do not push snow into the street. This can cause hazardous conditions for other motorists.
• Avoid building snow structures such as forts or igloos near the street that plows may cover over resulting in possible injury to children playing nearby.
