UG Commission set to consider raising age to buy tobacco to 21 years old at Thursday meeting

Legends multifamily housing, capital projects also on agenda Nov. 19

A change to the Kansas City, Kan., tobacco ordinance, raising the age to 21 to buy tobacco products, is on the agenda at the 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, Unified Government Commission meeting.

The ordinance would cover cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and tobacco products. The Unified Government Commission will meet in the Commission Chambers, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

The change in the ordinance would apply only to the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21 years old. The current age to buy tobacco is 18. The ordinance would stay the same regarding buying tobacco for another person (it is prohibited to buy tobacco for persons under 18) or distributing tobacco to another person under 18.

Backers of the proposed ordinance change hope to reduce smoking among teenagers by a significant percentage, perhaps 25 percent.
