UG Commission scheduled to meet tonight, to consider ordinance changing UG advisory boards and committees

The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Commission Chambers, City Hall, lobby level, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

On the agenda is an ordinance that would set rules for removing members of advisory boards. It also would establish an ad hoc board of code appeals regarding demolition orders, rental licensing and building codes.

At an earlier standing committee, the UG Commission said at times there were problems in getting some of the advisory board members to attend meetings.

The new rules state that board, agency and committee members in the UG serve at the pleasure of the UG Commission, unless otherwise provided for by laws.

Also, the new rules state that the mayor or commissioner who originally nominated the member may remove the board member with a vote of six members of the UG Commission.

A board or agency member cannot be removed by a person who did not originally nominate the member, except for cause, after a hearing held by the commission and a vote of six members of the commission.

The ordinance would abolish the commission on human relations and advisory committee on disabilities, and replace it with one commission on human relations and disabilities issues. The terms of the current human relations commission and advisory committee on disabilities member are abolished, with a new board of 13 members to be appointed.

A UG Commission special session is scheduled at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

The commission plans to recess to the ninth floor to go into an executive session, a closed session to discuss the administrator’s review and litigation, according to the agenda.
