Turner bids goodbye to old stadium, and celebrates new building projects at Turner Days this weekend

“Building Dreams Together” will be the theme of Turner Days, scheduled Oct. 12-13

The theme refers to the Turner School District’s building programs this year, with a new middle school and a new sports complex planned, according to Vikki Mullins, publicist for the Turner Days event.

The Turner district broke ground for the new district activities center last week and has already started work at the new middle school, she said. A bond issue passed earlier this year to fund the building projects.

Tonight will be an important homecoming at the existing Turner district stadium, Mullins said. It will be the last home football game there. “It’s the only stadium Turner School District has ever had,” she added.

Tonight’s homecoming will honor former players, band members, cheerleaders and drill team members at a special homecoming ceremony during the football game. The game starts at 7 p.m. and Turner will play Olathe West. There will be a special “lights out” at the stadium on Swartz Road, with the band playing as the lights are turned out, she added.

The new stadium will be on the same property as the high school on South 55th Street, just north of the high school.

This will be the 35th annual Turner Days celebration, Mullins said.

“I think it’s going to be a good time,” she said. “We’re excited to see the community come out. It will be a cool but dry weekend.”

Turner Days is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
The annual Turner Days parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the parade route running north on South 55th Street from Douglas to Inland.

Festivities at Turner Days will open after the parade.

Some other highlights of Turner Days will be a 5K run Saturday morning, a Little Mister and Miss Turner contest, mud volleyball competition, walk of fame induction, live music performances and vendors on Saturday. On Sunday, there will be a car show, church services, mud volleyball games and choir performances, as well as vendors.

Most of Turner Days is at Steineger Field at 58th and Metropolitan in Kansas City, Kansas.

The festival will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/turnerdaysofficial/?ref=br_rs .
