Tongie Chieftains over Ward, 59-23
by Brian Turrel
The Bishop Ward boys basketball team kept the game close early, but then Tonganoxie ran away with it, posting a 59-23 road win against the Cyclones.
The score was 15-11 in the Chieftains’ favor after the first quarter, with Ward getting three-pointers from Pedro Galvez and Jordan Dominguez-Jones. Tonganoxie used a backcourt trapping defense, but Ward was able to circumvent it with cross-court passes or an outlet down the left sideline.
The game broke open in the second quarter. Ward’s offense was shut out while Tonganoxie went on a 19-point run, including a last-second three-pointer from senior Tanner Thoemke that sent the Chieftains to the locker room on a high note.
Ward got going again in the third quarter, but was never able to make a dent in the Tonganoxie lead. Both coaches substituted extensively in the final quarter, getting some game experience for their reserves.
Senior Mac Thompson led the Chieftains’ scoring with 15 points. Eleven Tonganoxie players scored in the game, and 15 players logged minutes. Ward got 5 points each from Javier Torres-Osuna and Quincy Tabron.
Tonganoxie’s win raised its record to 2-9 in the Kaw Valley League, 4-14 overall. Tonganoxie will play at Bonner Springs at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Ward is still looking for its first win of the season (0-10 KVL, 0-17 overall).
