Thunderstorms possible today; hot weather returns Wednesday

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into this evening along and south of line from Kansas City to Kirksville, according to the National Weather Service.

Large hail and damaging winds will be the main hazards in the strongest storms but frequent lightning will pose a risk for anyone outside, the weather service said.

Hot and humid conditions return Wednesday through the end of the week. Thursday will be the warmest day with high temperatures near 100 degrees and heat indices of 105 to 110, according to the weather service. Otherwise, highs are expected to be in the middle 90s with heat indices of 100 to 105.

Today’s forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon, then a slight chance of showers between noon and 1 p.m., and a slight chance of showers after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 88 with a west southwest wind of 7 to 13 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Tonight, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 70 with a west southwest wind of 5 to 9 mph, becoming light west in the evening.

Wednesday, it will be sunny with a high of 93 and a heat index as high as 99, the weather service said. There will be a light and variable wind.

Wednesday night, expect a low of 76 with a southeast wind of 7 mph, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be sunny and hot, with a high near 99, the weather service said. A south southwest wind of 7 to 13 mph may gust as high as 21 mph.

Thursday night, the low will be around 78, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be sunny with a high of 96, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 78, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 94, the weather service said.

Saturday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms possible after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be 74.

Sunday, the high will be near 90, the weather service said.

Sunday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with a low of 71, according to the weather service.

Monday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high of 89, the weather service said.
