Thunderstorms moving through Wyandotte County, flood advisory in effect

Thunderstorms are currently moving through Wyandotte County, accompanied by heavy rain and lightning.

A severe thunderstorm warning was canceled for Wyandotte County about 7:26 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said the storm has weakened below severe limits and no longer poses an immediate risk to life and property. However, gusty winds and heavy rain are still possible with this thunderstorm, according to the weather service.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect in Wyandotte County through 10 a.m., according to the weather service.

The thunderstorm at its peak included hail and winds of up to 60 mph, the weather service said.

The weather service has issued a flood advisory for northwestern Wyandotte County and for Leavenworth County and southeastern Atchison County until 10 a.m. today. Close to 4 inches of rain was measured in Leavenworth County.

The weather service said this is just the first of two rounds of strong to severe storms that may hit this region today.

The first storm will exit the region by noon, according to the weather service.

A second round of storms is expected to develop later this afternoon as a cold front sweeps through the region, the weather service said.

The primary severe threat of the second storm will likely be confined to areas east of the Kansas City metro area, the weather service said. Large hail and strong wind gusts will also be possible with this secondary round of activity.

Today’s high will be near 78, the weather service said, with a south southwest wind of 6 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon. New rainfall amounts of a half to three-quarters of an inch are predicted. There may be patchy fog before 10 a.m.

Tonight, expect a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 7 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 54. A north northwest wind of 6 to 10 mph is possible.

Thursday, it will be sunny, with a high near 72, and a northwest wind of 6 to 10 mph, the weather service said. Thursday night, the low will be around 51, with a northwest wind of 3 to 8 mph.

Friday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and storms, according to the weather service. It will be mostly sunny with a high near 75. A light west wind will increase to 6 to 11 mph in the morning.

Friday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and storms, the weather service said. The low will be around 46.

Saturday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 59, according to the weather service.
