Three key contributors to the 2015 Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team have earned post-season recognition.
Second baseman Bailey Letts of Shawnee Mission Northwest and centerfielder Justice Scales of Shawnee Mission South were both named to the All-Region first team and All-Jayhawk second team while freshman catcher Savannah Dungen of Piper earned honorable mention on the all-Jayhawk squad.
A sophomore transfer from Pittsburg State, Letts led the Blue Devils in hitting with a torrid .496 average. She also led in extra base hits with 28 and was second in RBI with 30 despite missing the fall season because of rotator cuff surgery and an injured finger.
“A very skilled infielder and hitter, she was a mature presence in the field for us,” said KCKCC coach Kacy Tillery. Betts has signed to play at Austin-Peay State University in Tennessee this fall.
Scales repeated as a first team All-Region selection. A .491 hitter last year, she batted .414 this season with 29 RBI and a team high 12 stolen bases.
“Pressed into hitting in the No. 3 spot early, she moved to her natural No. 2 spot and hit very well,” Tillery said. Scales will continue her collegiate career at Park University.
Dungen hit .333 with 17 RBI in her first collegiate season.
“She did a good job handling our pitchers and threw out some runners,” Tillery said. “A smart player, she showed a lot of calmness behind the plate. She also had a grand slam home run against Highland.”
