Thinking cool for ‘Christmas in July’ on Saturday evening

Pontoon boats will decorate for Christmas on Saturday evening for the sixth annual Christmas in July celebration at Wyandotte County Lake Marina, 91st and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kansas.

Wyandotte County might be in a heat wave on Saturday with the heat index possibly reaching 107, but the event is still on, according to the Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department. The Christmas in July event will have mist tents and also there will be plenty of water.

By the time fireworks start on Saturday around 9:15 p.m., the temperature is expected to drop to around 89 with a 95 heat index, according to the forecast.

The event is free and open to the public, and there will be giveaways, according to officials. Twenty-five gift cards or items will be given away in drawings. There is no entry fee for the event or for the giveaways. The family event is for everyone, not just those who have boats.

A fishing tournament is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the judging for the boats will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by the boat parade. Fireworks are scheduled at 9:15 p.m. Registration is required for the boat parade.

A basketball tournament in conjunction with Christmas in July originally planned outdoors has been moved indoors, officials said.

Vendors will include Famous Daves, which will offer sandwiches for purchase.
