Teen victim of fatal shooting near 66th and Cleveland identified

The victim of the Tuesday shooting homicide in the 6600 block of Cleveland Avenue has been identified as Kaden Bauswell, 15, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department identified the victim on Wednesday.

The shooting took place on a sidewalk near Hazel Grove Elementary School, police said, not on school property, and the victim was not a student at the school. An unknown suspect was in a vehicle that fled the area before police arrived.

Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before noon Tuesday on a shooting call. When they arrived, they found Bauswell on a sidewalk, the victim of an apparent shooting, a police spokesman stated.

He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries, police said. The suspect has not been apprehended, according to police.

Hazel Grove Elementary School, which was holding summer classes, went into a lockdown as a precaution until the area was secured, working with the police department, according to police. All students were in the building at the time of the shooting. Officers from the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools’ Police Department also were on site to help with school dismissal.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Major Case Unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS, police said.
