Lake stocked with trout in preparation for opening day Saturday

Wyandotte County Lake was stocked with trout on Thursday in preparation for opening day at the lake on Saturday. A breakfast will be served by the Leavenworth Road Association at the marina from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. Permits are required for many people who fish at the lake. Those 15 and younger do not need a permit, and those who are 75 and older do not need a permit. Ages 16 to 64 need a state and county permit, while ages 65 to 74 need a state permit. Fishing permits are available for purchase at Walmart, Cabelas and Minnesota Bait. Perfect weather for opening day of fishing at Wyandotte County Lake

Sunshine and mid-60s temperatures. Who could ask for anything more for the opening day of fishing season at Wyandotte County Lake?

There was more, however, as anglers reported good fishing today. Several caught their limit and had already headed home at midday, according to other fishermen at the lake on Saturday afternoon, March 14.

The opening day of fishing, originally scheduled March 7, had been delayed one week because of ice on the lake. There was no sign of ice March 14 as temperatures were in the 70s earlier this week.

Residents enjoy beautiful weather at opening day of fishing

Wyandotte County Lake Park was crowded with residents enjoying 73-degree weather on opening day of the fishing season March 15.

The fish weren’t biting for everyone, but the sunny skies and mild weather were enough for many to get out and enjoy a day in the park fishing, walking, biking, boating and picnicking.

Opening day had been postponed twice because of ice still on the lake, and on Saturday, it looked like the ice had melted.

Isabeal Castillo was fishing in the children’s pond area with the assistance of her dad, Ricardo Avila, of Kansas City, Kan. She and her family like to go fishing regularly at the lake.

Isabeal said the fish were biting, but she hadn’t caught anything yet.

Thomas Barlow, Shawnee, Kan, has gone to opening day at the lake since the days he was a high school student at Washington High School.

He reported catching two trout. He used “Power Bait,” a commercial bait that has a cheese-based product. Worms were working for some other anglers located just northwest of the lake’s administration building, he reported.
