Former Cubs star to make appearance at T-Bones game tonight

The Kansas City T-Bones have announced that former Chicago Cubs legend Bobby Dernier will be at CommunityAmerica Ballpark tonight in Kansas City, Kan., as part of the Principal Financial Dreams Tour.

Kansas City native and 1984 National League Gold Glove recipient Bobby Dernier will throw out a first pitch and then sign autographs as the T-Bones serve as host to Grand Prairie at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Dernier, who still makes his home in the Kansas City area, was an integral part of the 1984 Cubs team that reached the postseason for the first time since 1945.

His first pitch will be at approximately 6:45 p.m. for the 7:05 game Wednesday, July 9. He’ll be signing autographs from approximately 5:30-6:30 and then 7:15-8:15.

The Principal Financial Dreams Tour is making 18 stops to minor-league stadiums around the country to help honor members of the military and the contributions they make to our country and communities. As part of the stop at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, The Principal will make a $1,000 contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project.

T-Bones game suspended

What a way to start the season. After 13 innings and a 7-7 score, the Kansas City T-Bones and Lincoln Saltdogs season opener Thursday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark was suspended until Friday night.

After giving up five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the T-Bones answered with three runs in the eighth. And then, trailing 7-5, Danny Richar singled home David Espinosa before scoring on a fielder’s choice by Nick Giarraputo.

The T-Bones threatened in the bottom of the 13th after Robby Kuzdale and Espinosa singled, and then advanced to second and third, respectively, on a one-out wild pitch by Conor Spink, the seventh Lincoln pitcher of the game. However, Danny Richar struck out and Bryan Sabatella grounded out, stranding Kuzdale and Espinosa.

The game will resume at 6 on Friday night. Shortly after the conclusion, the T-Bones will face off with Lincoln at 7:05 in the second game of the four-game series. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.

T-Bones sign veteran pitcher

The Kansas City T-Bones announced they have signed left-handed pitcher Kris Regas to a contract for the 2014 season.

Regas, 34 (11-15-79), a native of Bourbonnais, Ill., who is 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, spent the majority of the past three seasons with Lancaster and York of the independent Atlantic League. In 2013, splitting time between York and Lancaster, he went 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA in 23 appearances. In 354 career appearances during an 11-year career, Regas is 28-28 with 54 saves and a 3.80 ERA. He’s struck out 507 and walked 163.

“Regas is a veteran lefty strike-thrower, who’ll anchor the back of our bullpen,” said manager John Massarelli.

After playing his first two professional seasons, 2002-03, in the independent Frontier League, the New York Mets signed Regas as an undrafted free agent. He pitched part of the 2004 season with New York’s single-A team in Brooklyn. Regas then played for independent teams during 2005-08, before signing with Detroit in 2009. He reached triple-A Toledo that season, where he went 0-1 in seven appearances (8.0 innings), with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The T-Bones open the 2014 regular season at home in Kansas City, Kan., on May 15 against Lincoln.
