A large and loud contingent of fans of Mexican soccer team Monterrey went home cold but happy from Children’s Mercy Park on Thursday evening. Their team took a 5-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City to advance to the finals of the Concacaf Champions League tournament.

Kansas City was clearly playing to win. After resting a few regulars against Cincinnati on Sunday, manager Peter Vermes put out his top-tier lineup, starting Johnny Russell, Krisztian Nemeth and Gerso Fernandes across the front.

Sporting needed a big win to overcome the five-goal deficit incurred in the  first semi-final leg in Monterrey last week. When Gerso scored in the 6th minute off a cross from Johnny Russell, it looked like they might get it.

Monterrey answered in the 20th minute on a counter attack, and they answered again after Gerso scored in the 29th minute. Vermes said after the game that the first goal “deflated” his team.

Monterrey goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero saved a Kansas City penalty kick just before the half to keep the score 2-2.

Kansas City threatened in the opening minutes of the second half. Seth Sinovic headed a ball into goal that was called back for being offside, and Johnny Russell had two near misses.

The Rayados (Striped Ones) controlled the later stages of the game, picking up three more goals to close out Sporting’s longest Champions League run.

Vermes had a mixed evaluation of his team after the game.

“I think some guys played really well,” he said, “and I thought our mentality was good going into the game.

“You just can’t give up soft goals like that. We did that twice against this team and that hurt us.”

Sporting will face a quick turnaround, returning to MLS League play with a home match on Sunday at 6  p.m. against the New York Red Bulls.

Sporting KC on the road today in San Jose

Sporting Kansas City (4-3-0, 12 points) travels to face the San Jose Earthquakes (3-2-2, 11 points) on Sunday in the second of three consecutive road games.

The match will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT at Avaya Stadium with live television coverage on ESPN, WatchESPN and ESPN Deportes. A Spanish radio broadcast will be available in the Kansas City area on La Grande 1340 AM.

Losses to the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas last week have dropped Sporting KC to fourth place in Western Conference. The three teams currently ahead of Kansas City in the conference standings account for each of the club’s losses this season (including Real Salt Lake).

While the Earthquakes enter the weekend coming off a 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers on the road last Saturday, the team also remains undefeated at home during the 2016 regular season, with three wins and a draw.

San Jose sits two notches below Sporting KC at sixth place with 11 points. Manager Peter Vermes’ men will be up against history on Sunday, as Sporting KC last won in San Jose on Aug. 16, 2000. The team has collected 12 losses and five draws in their last 17 visits to the Earthquakes ever since (including playoffs).

San Jose swept the 2015 series with a pair of wins, including a decisive 5-0 triumph at Children’s Mercy Park on Aug. 19.

Chris Wondolowski, Cordell Cato and Anibal Godoy each accounted for two of the six goals San Jose scored against Sporting KC last season. However, Cato is likely to miss Sunday’s matchup with a right hamstring injury. Wondolowski, meanwhile, is tied for the MLS lead with six goals and has reached double-digit goals in each of the past six seasons — the only player in MLS history to accomplish that feat.

On the Sporting KC injury front, Matt Besler is back on the pitch after being sidelined for nearly a month with a concussion suffered during his time with U.S. Men’s National Team.

Another regular fixture of the back line, veteran Chance Myers, remains out with a hamstring injury. Defender Kevin Ellis (groin) and midfielders Soni Mustivar (hamstring), Paulo Nagamura (calf) and Justin Mapp (toe) also remain on the injury list heading into the weekend.

Sporting KC falls to Dallas, 2-1

Sporting Kansas City took its first road loss of the 2016 season on Sunday, falling 2-1 to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

The result drops Sporting Kansas City (4-3-0, 12 points) to fourth place in the Western Conference, while FC Dallas (5-1-2, 17 points) moves atop the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings.

Midfielder Lawrence Olum put Sporting Kansas City ahead in the 22nd minute, scoring his first MLS goal since 2014 off a corner kick from Benny Feilhaber, but FC Dallas drew level 13 minutes later through Michael Barrios.

Second-half substitute Mauro Rosales then curled home a free kick in the 68th minute to snap Sporting Kansas City’s two-game road winning streak.

Sunday’s nationally televised contest carried high stakes, as the winner would assume first place in the league table.

Captain Matt Besler returned to the Sporting Kansas City lineup after missing three games with a concussion, while winger Brad Davis became the fifth player in MLS history to reach 400 career appearances (including playoffs).

Both sides created multiple opportunities throughout the first half amid wet and windy playing conditions.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia produced his first of three saves in the seventh minute, diving left to palm Kellyn Acosta’s bending effort beyond the post. Davis was involved in Sporting KC’s first chance shortly thereafter, but his cross for Dom Dwyer was cut out by the sliding Zach Loyd.

Dwyer almost had his third goal in as many games after bundling the ball past goalkeeper Chris Seitz in the 16th minute, but the striker was whistled for a handball near the goal line following Feilhaber’s free kick delivery to the far post.

At the other end, Fabian Castillo did well to weave past two defenders before dragging wide in the 20th minute.

Sporting Kansas City drew first blood halfway through the opening stanza. Feilhaber’s shallow corner kick bounced across the face of goal and reached Olum, who buried a header from point-blank range for his fourth career MLS goal and his first since rejoining the club in December.

FC Dallas leads MLS with 15 goals through Week 7, and the Texas club showcased its firepower after falling behind.

In the 35th minute, Acosta sent a diagonal pass down the right flank that skipped across the wet surface, splitting two Sporting KC defenders to reach Barrios after Urruti applied a slight touch. Melia got his mitts to the ensuing shot but couldn’t keep the ball out of the net, bringing an end to his 214-minute road shutout streak to start the year.

Oscar Pareja’s men applied heavy pressure the latter stages of the first half, nearly grabbing the lead through Victor Ulloa only for Melia to produce a fine save in the 40th minute.

Tesho Akindele found the back of the net two minutes later, but the offside flag was raised and the match remained all square. Dwyer was on the receiving end of another opportunity just before the break, but struck narrowly wide after collecting a through ball from Medranda.

Dwyer and Medranda reversed roles in the 61st minute, when the Dwyer set up the midfielder with a clever back-heeled pass into space behind the Dallas backline. Medranda had only the keeper to beat, but Seitz made the pivotal save to deny Medranda his first MLS goal.

FC Dallas received a free kick in the 68th minute when Urruti drew a foul just outside the penalty area in a central position. Rosales, who had entered the match just five minutes earlier, expertly picked out the left corner from 20 yards to give the Texas side its first lead of the evening.

The hosts preserved their 2-1 advantage to the final whistle, but not before Sporting Kansas City came bitterly close to salvaging a point in second-half stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Davis’ left-footed free kick beat FC Dallas’ four-man wall but was turned away by Seitz. Two minutes later, a scramble in the penalty area saw the ball break to substitute Diego Rubio, who hammered just high of the crossbar amidst heavy traffic.

Sporting Kansas City’s road travels will continue next week, with four of the next five fixtures coming away from home. First is a visit to the sixth-place San Jose Earthquakes (3-2-2, 11 points) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The match will be televised nationally from Avaya Stadium on ESPN, WatchESPN and ESPN Deportes, with a local radio broadcast on La Grande 1340 AM.

Sporting Kansas City will look to snap a 17-game winless run in San Jose (including playoffs) dating back to 2000.
