Sporting comes from behind to win 3-2 over Colorado

Three second-half goals lifted Sporting Kansas City (3-1-0, 9 points) to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over the nine-man Colorado Rapids (2-2-0, 6 points) in a Friday night classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Walt Disney World.

Facing a 1-0 halftime deficit after an early Kellyn Acosta strike, Sporting surged ahead with goals from in-form attackers Khiry Shelton and Alan Pulido.

The shorthanded Rapids, who saw Danny Wilson and Jack Price receive straight red cards during the final half-hour, restored parity in the 84th minute through substitute Jonathan Lewis. But veteran defender Graham Zusi notched his first goal since April 2018 with 91 minutes on the clock to give Sporting a wild and much-needed win in the historic MLS is Back Tournament.

The pivotal result puts Sporting squarely in contention for a top-two finish in Group D going into Wednesday’s group stage finale against rivals Real Salt Lake. The top two teams in each of the tournament’s six groups, as well as the four best third-place finishers, will progress to the Knockout Stage.

With goalkeeper Tim Melia serving a red card suspension, 26-year-old Richard Sanchez stepped between the posts for his first Sporting Kansas City start and was called to action within two minutes, dropping low to smother Acosta’s long-range effort from beyond the penalty area.

Not long later, however, Acosta found the back of the net with a curling, left-footed belter near the top of the box to finish off an incisive Colorado move involving Diego Rubio, Nicolas Benezet and Cole Bassett.

Having conceded the opening goal for the first time this season, Sporting gradually gained a foothold and almost drew level at the 15-minute mark.

Ilie’s clever ball into space was chased down by Khiry Shelton, who stormed down the right channel and into the box before seeing his near-post effort blocked by Colorado’s debutant goalkeeper William Yarbrough.

On the ensuing corner kick, Shelton latched onto Johnny Russell’s in-swinging corner kick and put a shot on frame, but Price was stationed on the goal line to head clear and preserve his team’s lead.

Russell, who replaced Gerso Fernandes in Sporting’s starting XI, whipped another teasing corner into the mixer in the 25th minute that fell to Ilie Sanchez, whose bouncing volley deflected off Rubio — a former Sporting striker — and into the thankful mitts of Yarbrough.

An absolute rollercoaster of a second-half burst to life on the hour mark when Wilson wrapped both hands around Shelton and brought him to the turf, denying the Sporting forward an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Referee Dave Gantar initially brandished a yellow card, but Wilson was sent off upon video review. On the ensuing free kick, Pulido’s stinging strike bent over Colorado’s four-man wall and rattled the woodwork, much to the relief of a helpless Yarbrough.

Undeterred, Sporting found its equalizer in the 65th minute. Afforded space on the left wing, Luis Martins sent a looping cross to the far post that Gadi Kinda controlled and clipped back across the face of goal.

Shelton was on hand to fire home a thunderous volley at a tight angle to mark his third consecutive game with a goal, having bagged Sporting’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Minnesota United FC last Sunday.

Later, Zusi’s audacious shot attempt on the right edge of the box ricocheted off the outstretched Rubio and skipped marginally wide of the target, but video review confirmed Rubio to have illegally touched the ball with his hand.

Sporting was awarded a penalty kick, and Pulido made no mistake by slotting low into the left corner past Yarbrough. The 29-year-old Mexican has three goals and two assists in his debut campaign and is the first Sporting player ever to record a goal or an assist in his first four regular season appearances for the club.

The tale went from bad to worse for Colorado moments later, as Price received his marching orders for violent conduct and reduced the Rapids to nine men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, head coach Robin Fraser’s side grabbed an unlikely equalizer in the 84th minute. Mere seconds after Yarbrough took the ball off Shelton’s feet at one end, Colorado countered as longtime Sporting forward Kei Kamara slipped the ball into the path of Lewis. The 23-year-old tucked his shot low past Sanchez for his second tally of the campaign.

The final plot twist of a cracking encounter came in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Following a crazy scramble in a crowded penalty area, Zusi tried his luck with a low drive on the edge of the box that took a wicked deflection and looped into the back of the net.

Sporting held its 3-2 advantage past the 100-minute mark before Gantar’s full-time whistle drew an end to the gripping affair.

With three precious points in the bag, Sporting will conclude its group stage campaign Wednesday versus RSL in an 8 a.m. CT kickoff — the earliest start to a competitive match in club history. The game will be shown live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN app.

Sporting KC going to Disney World again tonight to play Colorado Rapids

Sporting KC is going back to Disney World tonight to play in the MLS is Back Tournament against the Colorado Rapids.

The soccer match in Florida will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, and also will be on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.

Played under the Friday night lights, this pivotal Group D encounter pits two teams that began the 2020 campaign with consecutive wins before dropping their MLS is Back Tournament opener on Sunday.

Sporting (2-1-0, 6 points) surrendered a second-half stoppage time lead in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Minnesota United FC, while the Rapids (2-1-0, 6 points) suffered a 2-0 setback at the hands of Real Salt Lake.

The 24 participating clubs in the MLS is Back Tournament have been divided into six groups of four, with the top two finishers in each group and the four best third-place finishers progressing to the Round of 16.

With Minnesota and RSL in early pole position, Sporting and Colorado will view Friday as a golden opportunity to regain ground in Group D. All group stage matches in the competition will also count toward the 2020 regular season standings, meaning a win for either team would be a boost in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Sporting dominated the first hour of action against Minnesota last weekend, taking a first-half lead through forward Khiry Shelton, only to come undone late as the Loons struck in the 92nd and 97th minutes.

A flashbulb moment that contributed to Sunday’s momentum swing was the ejection of goalkeeper Tim Melia in the 74th minute, which forced Sporting to play a man down for the rest of the game. With Melia serving a red card suspension, goalkeeper Richard Sanchez is set to make his first start in a Sporting uniform. The 26-year-old joined the club last November and has nine seasons of professional experience under his belt, including a three-year stint with the Chicago Fire from 2017-2019.

Shelton, who played for Sporting in 2018 before spending 2019 in Germany with SC Paderborn 07, has returned to the club with conviction in 2020. The 27-year-old has scored in back-to-back matches for the first time in his 77-game MLS regular season career and ranks among the league leaders in chances created from open play.

Fellow forward Alan Pulido has been equally as impressive, scoring or assisting in his first three appearances as Sporting’s marquee offseason acquisition from Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara. Pulido is one of two MLS players with two goals and two assists this season, alongside Columbus Crew SC playmaker and fellow Liga MX import Lucas Zelarayan.

Colorado lost its tournament curtain raiser on Sunday, but not before winning back-to-back games to begin the regular season for the first time since 2012. The Rapids appear to be headed in the right direction under head coach Robin Fraser, who has gone 7-3-0 since taking over on Aug. 25, 2019. Colorado notably scored 58 goals, second-most in club history, during a 2019 campaign that fell just short of a playoff berth despite a dismal 0-9-2 start.

A pair of former Sporting Kansas City forwards were instrumental in Colorado’s offensive uptick last year. Kei Kamara led the side with 14 goals, while Diego Rubio was close behind with 11. The 35-year-old Kamara has recorded five straight MLS seasons of at least 12 goals, while Rubio scored in both appearances against Sporting last season-a 1-1 tie in Colorado followed by a 3-2 Rapids win at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting and Colorado have squared off 78 times in all competitions, making the Rapids the most frequent opponent in Kansas City history. Sporting holds a narrow advantage at 31-29-18, including a 25-24-15 mark in the regular season. Vermes’ side went 6-0-5 against Colorado from 2009-2015, but Colorado has gone 7-2-2 in the series since August 2015.

Vermes’ side boasts a clean bill of health heading into Friday, with defender Andreu Fontas and midfielder Felipe Gutierrez the lone players on the club’s injury report. Fontas remains in Kansas City recovering from a quad strain, while Gutierrez-named the club’s most valuable player in 2019-is out for the season after undergoing successful knee surgery last month. On the Colorado sideline, defender and Olathe, Kansas, native Kortne Ford will miss out with a knee ailment.

The MLS is Back Tournament represents the historic and unprecedented return of Major League Soccer after a four-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following 16 straight days of group stage action from July 8-23, the knockout rounds will unfold with the Round of 16 (July 25-28), Quarterfinals (July 30 – Aug. 1), Semifinals (Aug. 5-6) and Final on Aug. 11. The tournament winner will receive a berth in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League and a sizable share of the $1.1 million prize pool.

Sporting KC also announced today the team has added league pool goalkeeper Charlie Lyon to the club’s roster for tonight’s match against the Rapids. Lyon has been in Orlando and has undergone the same testing and medical procedures as other players involved in the competition.

Sporting drops match to Minnesota, 2-1

Sporting Kansas City (2-1-0, 6 points) surrendered a late lead in a 2-1 defeat to Minnesota United FC (3-0-0, 9 points) on Sunday in the club’s MLS is Back Tournament opener at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Walt Disney World in Florida.

Forward Khiry Shelton fired Sporting ahead on the cusp of halftime, but the Loons struck twice in second-half stoppage time with an own goal and a last-gasp winner from Kevin Molino after goalkeeper Tim Melia received a red card in the 74th minute to reduce Sporting to 10 men.

Sunday’s clash, which pitted two teams that began the 2020 MLS regular season with consecutive wins, gives Minnesota early pole position in Group D of the MLS is Back Tournament, which will see the top two or three finishers in the four-team group advance to the knockout rounds later this month.

Sporting will look to rebound Friday at 7 p.m. when they face longtime rivals Colorado Rapids on ESPN2.

With his team returning to competitive action for the first time in 127 days, manager Peter Vermes made one lineup change from Sporting’s first two victories to open the campaign.

Gerso Fernandes earned his first start of the season, replacing Johnny Russell as part of a three-man attack alongside Shelton and Alan Pulido. In defense, right back Graham Zusi notably recorded his 300th career MLS appearance for Sporting, becoming one of 12 active MLS players to reach the milestone.

A dominant first half display saw Sporting conjure their first clear chance in the 15th minute when Minnesota goalkeeper Tyler Miller touched an out-swinging Luis Martins corner kick only as far as Ilie Sanchez, who volleyed marginally wide on the right side of the box.

Shortly thereafter, Gadi Kinda latched onto Graham Zusi’s delicious cross from the right flank and hammered inches high on his first touch.

Minnesota mustered a single shot attempt in the first 45 minutes, with midfielder Jan Gregus unleashing a venomous 35-yard drive that Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia did well to tip over the crossbar with his fingertips.

The Loons quickly reverted to the backfoot as Sporting’s Roger Espinoza almost opened the scoring twice in quick succession.

In the 36th minute, Kinda settled a cutback pass from Gerso and teed up Espinoza, whose curling effort near the top of the penalty area was pushed aside by the diving Miller. On Martins’ ensuing corner, the Honduran glanced a header just wide of the far right post.

Shelton lifted Sporting into a deserved lead two minutes before the break, rounding off a fluid counter-attack to break the deadlock.

Pulido’s superb move past Minnesota captain Michael Boxall at midfield gave Sporting a numerical advantage in the attacking half, and the Mexican spread the ball right to Shelton who slotted low inside the near post for his second goal of the season.

The game’s complexion changed during the final half-hour, much to the chagrin of a Sporting outfit that controlled the first 60 minutes.

The Loons thought they had equalized in the 63rd minute, but Molino was deemed to be offside after a VAR stoppage to wipe away Ethan Finlay’s would-be equalizer. Five minutes later, substitute Aaron Schoenfeld rattled the woodwork with a shot from the left side of the box.

Schoenfeld made a further impact in the 74th minute, racing behind the Sporting defense and crashing to the turf following a challenge from Melia. Sporting’s keeper was ejected for the foul-his first red card since 2014-prompting the introduction of Richard Sanchez for his club debut.

The Loons wasted a chance to level terms in the 90th minute when Hassani Dotson’s point-blank diving header floated off target, but parity was restored two minutes later on an unfortunate Shelton own goal after Gregus whipped a teasing free kick into the crowded penalty area.

With momentum on their side, Minnesota grabbed a 97th-minute winner to deny Sporting a result and continue their perfect start to the season. Raheem Edwards and Romain Metanire were involved in a buildup that culminated with Molino hammering low into the corner from the penalty spot.
