Sporting best in West after 2-1 victory over Minnesota

Sporting Kansas City (5-1-0, 15 points) moved four points clear atop the Western Conference standings with a 2-1 road victory over second-place Minnesota United FC (3-1-2, 11 points) on Friday at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Gadi Kinda vaulted the visitors ahead early before the clubs traded own goals on either side of halftime, giving Sporting its first-ever away win against the Loons and avenging a loss to Minnesota by the same score at the MLS is Back Tournament last month in Walt Disney World.

The result also ended Minnesota’s unbeaten start to the regular season as Sporting stayed within a point of Columbus Crew SC in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Riding a three-game regular season winning streak, Sporting will now prepare for the club’s first home fixture since March 7 when the Houston Dynamo (0-2-4, 4 points) visit Children’s Mercy Park on Tuesday.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City Plus and FOX Sports GO, serving as a rematch of Sporting’s home-opening 4-0 triumph over five months ago.

A new-look Sporting lineup was headlined by the MLS debut of English Premier League veteran and New Zealand international Winston Reid, who partnered with Graham Smith in central defense.

Twenty-year-old Jaylin Lindsey made his first appearance of the season at left back, fellow Sporting KC Academy product Gianluca Busio was deployed as a holding midfielder behind Kinda and Roger Espinoza, and Alan Pulido spearheaded a three-pronged attack alongside wingers Johnny Russell and Khiry Shelton.

Veteran goalkeeper Tim Melia and right back Graham Zusi rounded out the starting XI for Sporting’s first match in a home market since March 7.

Melia entered the night with a regular season shutout streak that dated back to Feb. 29 and prevented the Loons from drawing first blood inside three minutes. Minnesota winger Ethan Finlay was afforded an excellent opportunity when Luis Amarilla’s shot deflected into his path on the right side of the box, but Melia produced a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless.

Undeterred by the early scare, Sporting broke through in the 12th minute.

Pulido dropped deep to receive the ball and spread it wide to Lindsey, who picked out Kinda with a pocket of space on the left flank.

His cross into the six-yard area was intended for the on-running Espinoza but skipped through untouched and beat Minnesota’s debutant goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh, who was expecting a redirect from the Sporting midfielder. The play gave Kinda his third goal of the regular season, tied with Pulido and Shelton for the team lead.

Pulido almost doubled his side’s advantage in the 16th minute, settling a pass from Kinda and firing low from the top of the box, but Ranjitsingh made an impressive reflex save.

Ten minutes later, Melia conjured a spectacular stop of his own by leaping to touch Hassani Dotson’s volley over the crossbar.

Sporting was unfortunate to concede an equalizer with 32 minutes on the clock. A flowing Minnesota attack resulted in a Finlay strike that caromed off Lindsey and slipped inside the near post to level the score at 1-1, ending Melia’s regular season shutout streak at 347 minutes.

The last chance of the first half then fell to Kinda who raced onto Russell’s through ball, but his shot was smothered between the legs of Ranjitsingh.

Another stunning stop from Melia denied Dotson a goal two minutes into the second stanza. The midfielder’s flick-on header was destined for the far left corner, but Melia pushed the ball aside at full extension to record his third and final save of the evening.

Kinda was again involved in Sporting’s 55th-minute game-winner, accelerating into the attacking half and laying the ball to Russell on the left wing.

The Scottish international beat his defender along the endline and pulled back a driven cross that thumped off Minnesota defender Michael Boxall and nestled into the back of the net. This decisive moment would mark the first MLS match in Sporting’s 25-year history to feature multiple own goals.

Midway through the second period, Kinda continued to pull the strings with a lobbed diagonal ball to Zusi, who unfurled a 22-yard blast that Ranjitsingh managed to corral.

Vermes made a pair of notable substitutions in the late stages, awarding 19-year-old Cameron Duke his MLS regular season debut and inserting 22-year-old Felipe Hernandez. The shuffle meant that Sporting’s midfield trio featured three Sporting KC Academy products in Busio, Duke and Hernandez.

Seeking a late leveler, Minnesota dominated possession and territory in the dying embers but was unable to carve out a clear-cut chance.

A fleeting opportunity came and went in the 80th minute when Robin Lod’s low delivery fizzed dangerously across the face of goal, narrowly past the reach of a lurking Raheem Edwards.

Sporting KC back in action Friday in Minnesota

Major League Soccer’s anticipated return to home markets delivers a showdown as Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City (4-1-0, 12 points) visit second-place Minnesota United FC (3-0-2, 11 points) on Friday at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The newest chapter of this Midwestern rivalry will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with three hours of live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City Plus, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO beginning at 6 p.m. Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM will also provide local radio calls of the action, with The Final Whistle postgame show airing immediately afterward on 810 WHB.

The first five months of an unprecedented MLS campaign saw Sporting and Minnesota play five regular season matches apiece. Both clubs raced to 2-0-0 starts in early March prior to a lengthy suspension of play, which preceded the historic MLS is Back Tournament last month at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Sporting met Minnesota in the team’s group stage opener on July 12 and took a 1-0 first-half lead through forward Khiry Shelton, but the Loons struck twice in second-half stoppage time to snatch a 2-1 victory.

Minnesota finished second and Group D and progressed to the tournament semifinals, while Sporting beat the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake to finish atop the group before ultimately falling to the Philadelphia Union at the quarterfinal stage.

Friday marks the beginning of a fast and furious run of matches through the end of the regular season. All MLS clubs will play 18 more times between now and Decision Day on Nov. 8 to conclude the 23-game regular season. The MLS Cup Playoffs, featuring an expanded field of 18 teams, are slated to begin on Nov. 20 and culminate with the 25th MLS Cup on Dec. 12.

Under the guidance of 12th-year manager Peter Vermes — the longest tenured head coach in MLS — Sporting is off to one of its best starts in recent memory. The club boasts a plus-8 goal differential, tied for the best in MLS, and its 13 goals scored are the most through the first five matches of a regular season in club history.

Key offseason additions Alan Pulido (three goals, four assists) Khiry Shelton (three goals, one assist) and Gadi Kinda (two goals, two assists) have played instrumental roles for one of the league’s most potent attacks. On the opposite end of the pitch, Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia currently boasts a 316-minute regular season shutout streak dating back to Feb. 29, the longest active run in the league.

Similarly, head coach Adrian Heath and Minnesota are enjoying the best start to a campaign in the club’s four-year existence. The Loons remain unbeaten in regular season play and have 12 goals through five matches, all of which have taken place away from home.

Midfielder Jan Gregus is tied for second in MLS with four assists, while Kevin Molino (two goals), Luis Amarilla (two goals) and Ethan Finlay (two goals) have provided a clear scoring punch.

Sporting and Minnesota have battled on 13 occasions since the Loons joined MLS in 2017, with Vermes’ side holding a 5-4-2 record across all competitions.

The teams split the regular season series in 2019 — Sporting prevailed 1-0 at Children’s Mercy Park last August and Minnesota claimed a 2-1 home win a month later — prior to locking horns in the MLS is Back Tournament this summer. Sporting is winless in five previous trips to Minnesota in all competitions and will aim to end that drought in the Loons’ 2020 home opener.

Despite their strong position in the standings, Minnesota is currently faced with a pair of defensive injury concerns.

Former Sporting center back and reigning MLS Defender of the Year Ike Opara will miss the game with an undisclosed injury, while starting goalkeeper Tyler Miller recently underwent hip surgery and is out for the season. In Miller’s absence, newcomer Greg Ranjitsingh will likely get the nod between the posts.

The 27-year-old won consecutive USL Championship titles with Louisville City FC in 2017 and 2018 prior to joining Orlando City SC in the MLS ranks last year.

Midfielder Felipe Gutierrez is the only Sporting player ruled out on Friday. The club’s top scorer from 2019 had successful knee surgery in June and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.

Pulido nominated for MLS is Back Tournament Best XI

Major League Soccer has announced the candidates for the MLS is Back Tournament Best, with Sporting Kansas City striker Alan Pulido among the nominees for media voting.

The 29-year-old Mexican is one of 11 forwards on the voting ballot for the MLS is Back Tournament Best XI, which will be announced on Thursday.

Pulido played a leading role in Walt Disney World as Sporting Kansas City finished atop Group D and advanced to the quarterfinals of the historic competition. He started all five matches in the tournament and recorded team highs in goals (two), assists (three), shots (26) and fouls suffered (13).

After joining Sporting Kansas City last December on a club-record transfer from Liga MX giants Chivas de Guadalajara, Pulido scored in his first two MLS appearances to start the 2020 campaign. Following a four-month hiatus in match play, the forward picked up where he left off at the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando.

In the group stage, Pulido assisted Sporting’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Minnesota United FC, scored in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids and set up both goals in a 2-0 defeat of Real Salt Lake. In the knockout stage, he converted his penalty kick in a shootout win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC before adding another goal in a 3-1 quarterfinal loss to the Philadelphia Union.

Sporting’s three group stage matches in the MLS is Back Tournament counted toward the league standings, lifting manager Peter Vermes’ side to first place in the Western Conference with 12 points and a 4-1-0 record.

Pulido has three goals and four assists in regular season play and is the only MLS player with a goal or an assist in all five regular season appearances this year. He is also one of just two players — alongside teammate and fellow forward Khiry Shelton — with three goals, five chances created and 30 duels won during the 2020 regular season.

Pulido and Sporting will continue their MLS campaign on Aug. 21 at second-place Minnesota United FC as Major League Soccer returns to home markets for the first time since March.

MLS announced Saturday that all clubs will play an additional 18 matches through Nov. 8 to round out the 23-game regular season. Sporting has released the schedule for their next six matches through Sept. 13 and the additional fixtures will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Audi MLS Cup Playoffs are scheduled to begin Nov. 20 and will culminate Dec. 12 with the 25th MLS Cup.

Sporting’s next three home matches at Children’s Mercy Park — Aug. 25 against the Houston Dyanmo, Sept. 2 versus FC Dallas and Sept. 13 versus Minnesota — will be held at a reduced capacity of approximately 14% with socially distanced seating, mandatory face coverings for fans and a number of other safety protocols in place.

Tickets for the next three home contests will be available exclusively to Sporting Kansas City season tcket members via lotteries and no single-game tickets will be sold by the club on SeatGeek.com or at the stadium box office.
