Sporting KC to play Rapids tonight in Colorado

A pair of MLS charter members will rekindle their longstanding rivalry on Saturday evening when Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City (5-2-0, 15 points) visit the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

Saturday’s clash will kick off at 8 p.m. with three hours of live coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Kansas City, Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports Go. Local radio broadcasts will air live on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM, while the Sporting KC app will provide additional in-game updates.

The 80th all-time meeting between Sporting and Colorado across all competitions will pit two teams looking to bounce back from three-goal defeats.

Sporting suffered a 5-2 setback to the Houston Dynamo in their return to Children’s Mercy Park on Tuesday, while the Rapids took a 4-1 home loss to rivals Real Salt Lake last weekend as their winless skid hit four match.

Colorado was scheduled to play at FC Dallas on Wednesday, but the game was one of five MLS fixtures to be postponed that evening in response to the tragic events that recently took place in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

“We’ve met with the players over all the issues going on,” Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes told reporters on a video conference call on Thursday. “These issues concerning our country have to be dealt with, (we want them to know) we understand that. We’ve listened to players. We listen to staff, we’re incredibly supportive.

“I have to commend the guys, they’re pursuing excellence in two areas,” he continued. “They’re trying to be the best on the field and the second is off the field. They’d like to see change. I support that. I agree with it.”

Despite the midweek loss to Houston — a game in which Johnny Russell scored in the first half and Gadi Kinda bagged his team-leading fourth goal of the regular season — Sporting remains four points clear atop the Western Conference table and a point behind Columbus Crew SC in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Sporting will also be encouraged by the fact that they lead MLS with 17 regular season goals and ranks second with 2.43 goals per game.

Kinda and Mexican striker Alan Pulido are two of eight MLS players with at least three goals and two assists this year, while Russell and Khiry Shelton have provided a scoring punch on the wings. Kinda has notably scored in all four regular season appearances outside of the MLS is Back Tournament.

Led by second-year head coach and former MLS veteran Robin Fraser, the Rapids began 2020 brightly by going 2-0-0 for the first time since 2012.

Following a four-month hiatus in play due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Colorado hit a rough patch at the MLS is Back Tournament by finishing last in Group D with two losses and a draw. On the heels of a disappointing home result against RSL, the Rapids are now winless in four and will view Saturday as a potential springboard back into the win column.

Colorado has conceded a league-high 17 goals this season, and although questions linger in defense, the team boasts a formidable and deep attack.

Former Sporting forwards Kei Kamara and Diego Rubio combined for 25 regular season goals in 2019, while Jonathan Lewis and reigning MLS Rookie of the Year Andre Shinyashiki are also dangerous pieces in the final third.

Sporting and Colorado most recently met on July 17 as Vermes’ side emerged victorious by a 3-2 score in Walt Disney World. The instant classic proved to be one of the wildest games in the MLS is Back Tournament, delivering goals, red cards and moments of controversy.

Kellyn Acosta gave Colorado a 1-0 halftime lead with a brilliant early strike, but a pair of second-half red cards to defender Danny Wilson and captain Jack Price turned the game on its head. Shelton and Pulido scored to give Sporting a 2-1 advantage, and although Lewis equalized in the 84th minute, Graham Zusi broke Colorado hearts by slotting home a deflected strike in the 91st minute.

As MLS originals who joined the league in 1996, Sporting and Colorado have squared off 79 times in all competitions, making the Rapids the most frequent opponent in Kansas City history. Sporting holds a narrow advantage with 32 wins, 29 losses and 18 ties, including a 26-24-15 record in the regular season.

However, Sporting has a 5-18-10 regular season road record in the series, winning just three times in Colorado since the turn of the millennium (2000, 2004, 2014).

Saturday marks the resumption of a busy match schedule through the end of the regular season, as clubs will play one or two times per week through Decision Day on Nov. 8 to conclude the 23-game campaign. The Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, featuring an expanded field of 18 teams, are slated to begin on Nov. 20 and culminate with the 25th MLS Cup on Dec. 12.

Sporting Kansas City’s first match at Children’s Mercy Park in 171 days was a memorable game they will want to forget. The Houston Dynamo, last in the Western Conference, gave Sporting a 5-2 drubbing in front of the nearly 2,300 fans fortunate enough to get tickets to the limited-attendance game.

Sporting started the match with initiative, pushing high up the field and creating offensive opportunities. However, in the 17th minute, in a sign of things to come, Houston’s attack found space among KC’s widely spread defense and Alberth Elis tapped in a cross for the first goal.

Sporting answered back in the 26th minute when Johnny Russell volleyed in a rebound off the crossbar to equalize.

Houston pushed back in front just before halftime, swinging the ball to the right side to catch Kansas City’s defense out of position.

The Dynamo came out firing again after halftime. Niko Hansen received a smooth pass forward from Christian Ramirez, then outraced the retreating KC defense before beating Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia one on one.

Sporting pulled back within one goal a minute later when Gadi Kinda knocked in a rebound off a header by Alan Pulido.

Houston put the game out of reach with two goals by Darwin Quintero in the 57th and 61st minutes, sapping most of the remaining energy from the stands.

In the final 30 minutes, Sporting KC made a series of substitutions to create offensive pressure, but Houston stayed solid defensively, venturing out only infrequently for counter-attacks.

Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said that he would not judge his players’ performance by one game, saying that it “was just a bad game.” He noted that the team had started “chasing shadows” after their promising start, and that the defense had “been late” at times.

Despite the loss, Sporting Kansas City maintains their first place standing in the Western Conference, with a 5-0-2 record. They will play next against the Colorado Rapids in Denver on Saturday, Aug. 29, and they’ll be back at home against FC Dallas on Sept 2.

Sporting KC to play Houston Tuesday night in KCK

World-class Children’s Mercy Park will hold its first MLS home match in over five months when Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City (5-1-0, 15 points) battle for a fourth straight regular season win against rivals Houston Dynamo (0-2-4, 4 points) on Tuesday night.

The highly anticipated showdown will kick off at 7:30 p.m with three hours of live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City Plus, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO beginning at 7 p.m. The match also is on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Grande 1340 AM (Spanish).

Following detailed safety protocols developed in conjunction with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, Tuesday’s contest will be held at a reduced capacity of approximately 14 percent with extensive health and safety protocols in place.

Match tickets are available exclusively to Sporting Kansas City season ticket members via lottery and no single-game tickets will be sold by the club on SeatGeek.com or at the stadium box office.

With 15 points and a 5-1-0 record, Sporting currently owns a four-point lead at the summit of the Western Conference.

Manager Peter Vermes’ men are riding the waves of a three-game regular season winning streak, including a well-earned 2-1 road victory over Minnesota United FC last Friday.

Sporting is one point shy of Columbus Crew SC in the Supporters’ Shield race and tied for the league lead with 15 goals scored, an impressive clip of 2.5 goals per game.

Friday’s result in Minnesota was highlighted by an early strike from midfielder Gadi Kinda and a game-winning own goal forced by winger Johnny Russell 10 minutes into the second half.

Kinda is now tied for the team lead with three league goals this year alongside forwards Alan Pulido and Khiry Shelton. All three players notably joined the club in the offseason — Shelton returning for his second stint in Kansas City after spending 2019 at German side SC Paderborn 07.

Defensively, New Zealand international center back and English Premier League veteran Winston Reid landed his MLS debut against the Loons and recorded seven clearances, the most by a Sporting player in 2020.

A quartet of Homegrown Players made strong impressions as well: 18-year-old midfielder Gianluca Busio and 20-year-old defender Jaylin Lindsey went the full 90 minutes, while 19-year-old Cameron Duke and 22-year-old Felipe Hernandez came off the bench as midfield reinforcements. This marked the first time ever that Sporting finished a match with four Academy products on the pitch.

At the opposite end of the table, 12th-place Houston is still seeking its first win of 2020 after a 0-2-4 start. The club is led by first-year head coach Tab Ramos, a longtime club and U.S. international teammate of Vermes, who spent 2011-2019 as the U.S. U-20 head coach.

The Dynamo settled for a scoreless draw with FC Dallas on Friday but were unfortunate not to take all three points, having dominated for large portions of the match.

The Dynamo are the only MLS team without a win and their six-game winless drought to start the season is tied for the longest such streak in club history.

Houston has a 4-26-5 regular season road record since the start of 2018, recording just two shutouts in that 35-game stretch. Ramos has no shortage of weapons at his disposal, however, as the club ranks fifth in MLS with 10.5 chances created per game and boasts a formidable attack. Forwards Alberth Elis and Darwin Quintero are two of five MLS players — a group that includes Sporting’s Russell — with at least 20 goals and 20 assists in the regular season since the start of 2018.

By the time Sporting and Houston take the field on Tuesday, 171 days will have elapsed since the rivals last met at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting’s home opener on March 7 was the club’s final game before MLS suspended play for four months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting was one to remember for the hosts, as Pulido, Kinda, Shelton and Roger Espinoza all found the back of the net in a resounding 4-0 triumph.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia also set a club record with his 46th career regular season shutout as Sporting improved to 4-0-2 in their last six regular season meetings against the Dynamo. Melia is off to a flying start in 2020, posting a 4-0-0 regular season record with a 0.41 goals against average and .909 save percentage.

Sporting enters Tuesday with just one player unavailable for selection, as midfielder Felipe Gutierrez is out for the season after undergoing successful knee surgery this summer.

On the Houston sideline, forward Michael Salazar is out with a knee injury while defender Victor Cabrera, veteran midfielder Boniek Garcia and striker Mauro Manotas are all listed as questionable with thigh ailments. Manotas has scored seven goals in nine previous appearances against Sporting in all competitions.
