Kansas City Kansas Community College added speed to solid pitching and effective hitting in a 9-4 win over Barton County Friday.

The Blue Devils parlayed six stolen bases with the combined 5-hit pitching of three hurlers in boosting their record to 3-1 heading into a doubleheader with Barton at noon Saturday.

Parker Weddle worked the first four innings, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out five and walking three. Chase Terrell also gave up just two hits but one was a 3-run home run by Connor Allen with none out in the seventh inning. A Kansas City Kansas Community College pitching staff that gave up 17 hits in the season opener on Tuesday came within two outs of a no-hitter in an 18-1 win over Mid-America Nazarene junior varsity on Wednesday.

The lopsided win evened the Blue Devils record at 1-1 heading into a 9-inning single game with Barton County at 2 p.m. Friday and a noon doubleheader Saturday.

Three Blue Devil pitchers allowed only two runners over the first six innings before Mid-America broke up the no-hitter with one out in the seventh. Four KCKCC pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run on two hits while striking out 10 and walking one.

Hunter Cashero worked the first three innings, striking out five and walking one. Tre Simmons fanned three in two hitless innings and Joseph Reyes struck out one in one inning before Mid-America broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single in the seventh off Brett Owen. The lone run came on a two-out hit.

After taking a 3-0 lead after two innings, the Blue Devils scored seven runs in the third and eight in the fourth. Substituting at every position, 18 Blue Devils went to the plate, collecting 14 hits in six innings.

Cole Dawson doubled twice and singled and Palmer Hutchinson singled twice as each drove in three runs to lead the way. Caleb Brown also doubled twice; Brendyn Bard singled twice; Jaylon Johnson doubled in two runs; and Darius Freeman one with a double.

Blue Devils drop baseball opener to State Fair, 17-11

Offensively, Kansas City Kansas Community College’s baseball team earned a B-plus in its season opener Tuesday. But pitching was no better than a D in a 17-11 loss to State Fair.

The Blue Devils used eight pitchers and five gave up two or more runs in their one-inning stints to more than offset a 12-hit, 11-run offensive effort.

The Blue Devils resume action Friday, playing host to Barton County in a 9-inning game at 2 p.m. and then a Saturday doubleheader at noon.

KCKCC led State Fair three times, 1-0 after one inning, 4-3 after three and 7-5 after four only to have the Roadrunners score seven runs in the fifth inning, three coming on a bases-loaded triple by Zachary Dillman. Clayton Meyer swung the big bat for State Fair, driving in six runs with five hits including three home runs and a double.

Lansing’s Caleb Adams led the way for KCKCC, driving in five runs with two doubles and a single.

Adams put KCKCC ahead 4-3 with a two-run double in the third and gave the Blue Devils a 7-5 lead with another two-run double in the fourth.

Brayden Vawter drove in four runs, three on a 3-run home run in the eighth inning; Pablo Sanchez doubled twice and singled; Brendyn Bard doubled twice; and Cole Dawson doubled.

Parker Weddle started on the mound for KCKCC, striking out three and walking two in his one inning and Alan Mercado gave up a single while walking two in a scoreless second inning.

But the next five hurlers were touched for 16 runs and 13 hits before Sebastian Velez worked the final two innings, allowing two hits and one run.
