Offices closed today

Several offices are closed Monday, June 20, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

It is a federal holiday, with federal offices closed, and it also is a Unified Government and Board of Public Utilities holiday, with those offices closed. It is also a state holiday in Kansas. The BPU will have emergency service available, with administrative offices closed.

In the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools, there will be no extended learning summer program on June 20, and the district office will be closed June 20.

The U.S. Postal Service will observe June 20 as a holiday, and will not have residential delivery on Monday, June 20.

All Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library locations will be closed June 20 to observe the Juneteenth holiday.

KCK resident to speak at Juneteenth event today in Topeka

Richard Mabion of Kansas City, Kansas, will be the guest speaker at a Juneteenth event Friday to be held by the Kansas attorney general’s office in Topeka.

The Kansas attorney general’s Office will hold a Juneteenth commemoration event this Friday, June 18, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall, second floor auditorium, 120 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, Kansas.

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Attorney General Derek Schmidt held a similar event in 2019. No event was held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will feature guest speaker Mabion, who is a Vietnam veteran, an award-winning entrepreneur and a leader in sustainability efforts.

Before the lecture, there will be a reception with individually wrapped refreshments and bottled water. The event is open to the public.

Juneteenth parade scheduled Saturday in KCK

A Juneteenth parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at Quindaro Park, 3345 Sewell Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

The parade travels on Brown Avenue, 27th Street, to Quindaro Boulevard, ending at 21st and Quindaro.

Chester Owens, historian, is the grand marshal of the parade.

It is sponsored by the Kansas City, Kansas, NAACP, Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Black Trade Unionists and the Vernon Multi-Purpose Center. For information, call 913-707-6862.

A Juneteenth Celebration is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20, at 18th and Quindaro Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas.

Avenue of Life is celebrating Juneteenth Freedom Day from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at 500 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

That celebration will include free food, face painting and a bouncy house. Children are welcome.

In Kansas City, Missouri, Juneteenth events are planned Friday and Saturday. A Miss Juneteenth Pageant will be held Friday, June 18, at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Juneteenth KC Reunion, Heritage Festival, will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 19, in the 18th and Vine historic jazz district of Kansas City, Missouri. There will be food, music and vendors.
