Donnelly College celebrates diversity with Multicultural Festival

Once a year Donnelly College has a cultural day where the students talk about their countries.

This year the Donnelly College Multicultural Festival was held Friday, April 11.

The students share food from their countries and information about the countries. Donnelly College, at 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., is known as an international four-year college.

Students from all over the world come here to study at Donnelly College and this cultural event showcases them.

Not only did they have food from their countries and talk about their countries, but they also showcased dances from their countries, making this event a truly cultural experience.

More than 200 people attended this event.

Freed after 19 years on death row, former inmate to address topic of death penalty

Curtis McCarty, on death row for 19 years in Oklahoma for a crime he did not commit, will be the guest speaker April 8 at Donnelly College, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in Donnelly’s Community Event Center.

McCarty spent more than 21 years in prison – including 19 years on death row – before being exonerated in 2007.

McCarty was re-convicted twice and re-sentenced to death three times. It took more than 16 years for McCarty to secure proper DNA testing, and another three years to win a new trial with this evidence.

Since being exonerated, McCarty has been advocating for repeal of the death penalty all over the world. hand the flaws in the death penalty system, and the possibility of a state making the biggest mistake of all: executing an innocent person.

His appearance April 8 is sponsored by Donnelly College and the Archdiocese of Kansas.

The event is free and open to the public.

Donnelly plans Multicultural Festival April 11

Donnelly College will hold its 2014 Multicultural Festival fr0m 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 11,  at 608 N. 18th St., in Kansas City, Kan.

This annual, family-friendly event allows Donnelly College to showcase and celebrate the wide array of cultures included in its student population.

Highlights of this year’s festival will include fun and interactive student presentations;  international food sampling; henna body painting; live music and dance performances; and hand-crafted items, which will be available for purchase. Admission, as well as on-campus parking, is free and open to the public.

Student displays, designed to educate on local, regional, and international culture and customs, will be held from  4 to 6:30 p.m. in Donnelly College’s Community Event Center.

Food vendor sales, arts and crafts, and musical performances will take place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the Campus Meeting Room. Ottoman’s House, Ten Thousand Villages, The Embellished Body, and local, Latin music group, Son Selecta, will be among the featured vendors and performers.

“The Multicultural Festival is my favorite event of the year,” said Betsy Gran, Multicultural Festival co-coordinator. “Our students come from all over the world and it’s wonderful to celebrate their cultures–and ours–through food, dance and music.”
