T-Bones derail Gary with combined two-hitter
With the help of two doubles by Ryan Cavan and a combined two-hitter, the Kansas City T-Bones held off the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 2-0, Friday night in front of 6,624 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
The T-Bones started the night quickly with a lead-off double by Cavan in the bottom of the first inning down the left-field line. Two batters later, Jake Blackwood singled, knocking in Cavan and giving Kansas City its first run of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, after Jacob Hayes reached on an error and stole second, Cavan came through again with his second double of the night and 13th of the season. Hayes scored easily, giving Kansas City a 2-0 lead.
That was all the Kansas City pitchers needed. Starter Mike Nannini, who signed with the T-Bones earlier in the day, threw four perfect innings. He was replaced in the top of the fifth by Derek Loera (2-0), who pitched a perfect fifth before the RailCats recorded their first hit of the night, a lead-off single in the sixth by catcher Jaime Del Valle.
The RailCats added another single off Loera in the seventh, before Aaron Baker and Fernando Hernandez (4) combined for a perfect 2 1/3 innings.
Kansas City (19-16) has now won four in a row. The T-Bones will continue their three-game series against Gary SouthShore (20-19) on Saturday night at 7:05.
