Suspect in Turner standoff surrenders after firing shots

A standoff in the 900 block of South 55th Street ended peacefully without injury, according to Kansas City, Kan., police.

The suspect fired shots in the air, and in the officer’s direction, when officers arrived and told the suspect to put down his weapon, a police spokesman said.

A report had come in to police about 3:51 a.m. Nov. 22 that there was an armed man in his 20s standing in the street waving a handgun, the spokesman said.

Police, after arriving at the scene and hearing the gunfire, took cover and continued to communicate with the suspect for almost an hour, the spokesman said.

Officers were able to convince the suspect to put his weapon down, and he surrendered and was taken into custody without injury, according to the police spokesman.
