Suspect arrested and charged in shooting death near 64th and Farrow

A suspect has been arrested in the March 31 shooting death of a man in the 6400 block of Farrow Avenue.

James Edward Merritt Jr. was arrested and charged in the March 31 death of Mark Winner, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department spokesman.

Winner was found deceased inside his home on Farrow, the victim of a single gunshot, on March 31, police stated.

An investigation has indicated that Merritt, a neighbor of Winner’s, was involved in a shooting outside the home, when a stray bullet pierced a window, fatally striking Winner, the spokesman said.

Merritt fled the scene and later was apprehended in Topeka, Kansas, earlier this month.

He was booked into the Wyandotte County Jail and faces a number of felony charges, including aggravated endangerment of a child; criminal possession of a firearm by a felon; criminal discharge of a firearm; distribution of illegal drugs; and murder in the first degree in the commission of a felony, the police spokesman stated.

This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Major Case Unit. Anyone with information on this case is urged by police to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
