The Sumner Academy Sabres improved their record to 4-5 with a 60-49 victory against Eisenhower on Wednesday in the first round of the Spring Hill Invitational Tournament.
Sumner Academy grabbed the lead against Eisenhower High School, Goddard, on a two-pointer from Derek Sykes in the second period and held on.
Sumner pulled ahead early, claiming a 26-23 lead at the half.
The Sabres offense was led by Sykes, who scored 18 points, including seven during the first period.
Two other players also racked up double digit scores for Sumner Academy. Shaun Rainey contributed 14 points and Jalen Taylor added 13 points going 6-for-6 from free throw line.
Also contributing for Sumner Academy were Vance Jackson III (7 points), Saadique Perkins (6 points) and Jaunce Marshall (2 points).
Sumner Academy shot 23-for-30 (76 percent) from the free throw line for the game.
Sumner Academy will play Liberal in the second-round tournament game at 6:30 p.m. today in Spring Hill.
