Standoff ends peacefully at Welborn Lake

A standoff with police and a resident ended peacefully today in the 3000 block of Welborn Lake Drive.

According to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, officers were sent to an address in the 3000 block of Welborn Lake Drive about 8:34 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. The location is near 51st and Leavenworth Road.

When they arrived, officers were told that a verbal argument had escalated, and a victim feared for her safety. The woman called the police and reported that a man was agitated, threatening harm and had weapons inside the residence, the spokesman stated.

The officers who responded tried to talk with the suspect, but they were unable to do so safely, according to the spokesman.

The police established a perimeter and called in the special operations unit to deescalate the incident, the spokesman stated.

Negotiators were able to establish contact and quickly resolve the incident safely without any injuries reported, according to the spokesman. The suspect surrendered peacefully to officers, police said. Five children at the home were unharmed, the spokesman stated.

According to the spokesman, this incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
