Sporting KC wins U.S. Open Cup, 2-1

Sporting KC won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night by beating the New York Red Bulls, 2-1, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Scoring the winning goals for Sporting KC were Latif Blessing, with an assist by Graham Zusi, and Daniel Salloi, with an assist from Benny Feilhaber. New York’s loan, late goal came from Bradley Wright-Phillips.

It was the fourth time Sporting KC has won the U.S. Open Cup title, with previous wins in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017. The fourth championship tied the record among Major League Soccer teams, with the Chiago Fire and Seattle Sounders also having four.

Sporting KC became the only Major League Soccer club to have four major championships during the past six seasons, and manager Peter Vermes became the second coach to win an MLS Cup and three Open Cup titles.

Sporting KC next plays at 1 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. LA Galaxy will visit. Tickets are available at SeatGeek.com.
