Sporting KC still has chance at playoff berth despite 2-0 loss Wednesday night

Sporting Kansas City still will be able to try for a playoff berth despite losing 2-0 to the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Now in sixth place in the Western Conference, Sporting KC is trying for a win at the final home match at 6 p.m. Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. The opponent will be the LA Galaxy.

If Sporting KC wins on Sunday, it would go to the postseason competition for the fifth year in a row. A draw or loss would leave the team waiting on other teams’ results to go to postseason competition.

With a loss Sunday, Sporting KC would need the Quakes to lose to FC Dallas. With a tie, Sporting KC would get into the postseason competition if San Jose loses or draws, or if Seattle loses or draws against Real Salt Lake.

In Wednesday’s match, the Rapids won for the first time in Kansas City since 2002, snapping a 15-game road winless streak in the series. Two goals were scored in the final 15 minutes. Juan Ramirez came off the bench in the 74th minute to set up both goals, assisting Dillon Powers in the 78th minute and Marcelo Sarvas in the 86th minute.

A limited number of tickets, including standing room only tickets are available for Sunday’s match through Ticketmaster.com and the first 5,000 fans inside the stadium will receive Sporting KC touchscreen gloves.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the Fall Festival on the Sprint Plaza at Sporting Park, as well as a “Paint the Wall” ceremony at 5:15 p.m. featuring Sporting KC captain Matt Besler.
