Some close contests in tonight’s election

Democratic challenger Jay Sidie ran a close contest against incumbent Republican Congressman Kevin Yoder in the 3rd District on Tuesday night.

Sidie had 56 percent of the vote in Wyandotte County, where results were complete. As returns were not all in yet at 11:45 p.m. from other parts of the 3rd District, district-wide results were not complete as of this story’s writing. It was 48 percent for Yoder and 44 percent for Sidie district-wide as of 11:45 p.m., with many precincts still out. About 129 of 630 precincts were reporting.

Sen. Steve Fitzgerald, R-Leavenworth, survived a strong challenge from Democrat Bill Hutton in the state Senate, 5th District, according to results from the secretary of state’s website. Just 500 votes separated the two.

Fitzgerald had 13,100 total votes to Hutton’s 12,600. Hutton won in Wyandotte County, while Fitzgerald took Leavenworth County.

In the 6th District, state Senate, Sen. Pat Pettey was the apparent winner. However, five precincts out of 49 still had not reported as of 11:45 p.m. Pettey had 11,461 votes to Libertarian Jason Conley’s 4,459.

Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist., won re-election with 67 percent of the vote over Republican challenger Kevin Braun. The vote was 7,364 to 3,578.

Turnout was 61 percent of registered voters in Wyandotte County in the general election. A total of 45,068 people voted out of 79,087 registered voters.

All results were unofficial, and will not be official until after votes are canvassed next week.

With 78.5 percent of the vote, the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education bond issue passed on Tuesday night. There were 23,053 yes votes to 6,289 no votes.

The leader of the U.S. Senate contest in Kansas was incumbent Republican Sen. Jerry Moran, who had 528,829 votes to Democrat Patrick Wiesner’s 298,034, with 2,451 precincts of 3,509 reporting.
